[Termes IGN] source de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Maintaining knowledge about the provenance of datasets, that is, about how they were obtained, is crucial for their further use. Contrary to what the overused metaphors of ‘data mining’ and ‘big data’ are implying, it is hardly possible to use data in a meaningful way if information about sources and types of conversions is discarded in the process of data gathering. A generative model of spatiotemporal information could not only help automating the description of derivation processes but also assessing the scope of a dataset’s future use by exploring possible transformations. Even though there are technical approaches to document data provenance, models for describing how spatiotemporal data are generated are still missing. To fill this gap, we introduce an algebra that models data generation and describes how datasets are derived, in terms of types of reference systems. We illustrate its versatility by applying it to a number of derivation scenarios, ranging from field aggregation to trajectory generation, and discuss its potential for retrieval, analysis support systems, as well as for assessing the space of meaningful computations. [Termes IGN] logiciel libreRésumé : (Auteur) When conducting research within a framework of Geographic Information Science (GISc), the scientific validity of this work can be argued as highly dependent upon the extent to which the methods employed are reproducible, and that, in the strictest sense, can only be fully achieved by implementing transparent workflows that utilize both open source software and openly available data. After considering the scientific implications of non-reproducible methods, we provide a review of both open source Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and openly available data, before describing an integrated model for Open GISc. We conclude with a critical review of this embryonic paradigm, with directions for future development in supporting spatial data infrastructure. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) The paper investigates whether the methods chosen for representing uncertain geographic information aid or impair decision-making in the context of wildfire hazard. Through a series of three human subject experiments, utilizing 180 subjects and employing increasingly difficult tasks, this research evaluates the effect of five different visualizations and a text-based representation on decision-making under uncertainty. Our quantitative experiments focus specifically on the task of decision-making under uncertainty, rather than the task of reading levels of uncertainty from the map. To guard against the potential for generosity and risk seeking in decision-making under uncertainty, the experimental design uses performance-based incentives. The experiments showed that the choice of representation makes little difference to performance in cases where subjects are allowed the time and focus to consider their decisions. However, with the increasing difficulty of time pressure, subjects performed best using a spectral color hue-based representation, rather than more carefully designed cartographic representations. Text-based and simplified boundary encodings were among the worst performers. The results have implications for the performance of decision-making under uncertainty using static maps, especially in the stressful environments surrounding an emergency. [Termes IGN] périodiqueRésumé : (auteur) A set of 12,436 papers published in 20 GIScience journals in the period 2000–2014 were analysed to extract publication patterns and trends. This comprehensive scientometric study focuses on multiple aspects: output volume, citations, national output and efficiency (output adjusted with econometric indicators), collaboration, altmetrics (Altmetric score, Twitter mentions, and Mendeley bookmarking), authorship, and length. Examples of notable observations are that 5% countries account for 76% of global GIScience output; a paper published 15 years ago received a median of 12 citations; and the share of international collaborations in GIScience has more than tripled since 2000 (31% papers had authors from multiple countries in 2014, an increase from 10% in 2000).
