This will bring numerous benefits for applications requiring fast and precise positioning. This article discusses some of the implications for receiver and software design and for instantaneous ambiguity-resolution techniques. "Understanding Galileo" is a regular column that explores the science and technology behind satellite-based positioning, navigation, and timing systems in general and proposed Galileo system in particular. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) The Global Positioning System is made possible, in large part, by the use of atomic frequency standards onboard the satellites and at the tracking stations here on the ground. These standards, both rubidium vapor cells and cesium beam tubes, control the timing and frequency of the signals emitted by the satellites. They possess the required characteristics of very high stability and high accuracy. Once set to the correct time, clocks driven by these standards maintain the correct time to within tiny fractions of a second for long periods. But no clock, not even an atomic one, is perfect. The performance of individual clocks in the satellites and at tracking stations is compared against GPS System Time which is a synthetic or"paper"time scale derived from the clocks in all of the satellites as well as those at the GPS Control Segment tracking stations. This time scale is kept closely aligned to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) as maintained at the US. Naval Observatory (ignoring UTC leapseconds). In addition to the use of GPS for the monitoring and maintenance of the system clocks, GPS is used by the wider precise time and time interval community for synchronizing clocks and frequency standards around the globe. In this article, a team of researchers from the Geodetic Survey Division of Natural Resources Canada describes a technique they have developed for monitoring the performance of both GPS receiver and satellite clocks in real-time using a regional network of tracking stations. It is even more challenging to provide additional services such as integrity. This article presents the main results of the program at the end of the GalileoSat definition phase including navigation, timing, and integrity systems performance analysis. A small satellite in low earth orbit (LEO) carrying a GPS receiver will see the satellites of the GPS constellation rise and set behind the earth. From measurements of the Doppler shifts of the radio waves during occultations of the GPS satellites, it is possible to deduce the bending of the radio waves in the atmosphere of the Earth, and hence determine the density profile of the atmosphere. The method is unaffected by cloud, does not involve radiometric calibration like other remote sensing methods, and provides density soundings over the entire globe. This technical paper examines the spatial distributions of occultations for four different GPS antenna configurations on the LEO and for orbits of the LEO ranging from equatorial to polar. It is found that the most uniform spatial distribution of occultations occurs for orbits with inclinations near 60° and 120°. In addition, probability distributions are computed for the number of GPS satellites in view and the geometric dilution of precision, the latter being a measure of the accuracy with which the orbit of the LEO may be determined. Because underflight of a GPS satellites by the LEO offer an opportunity to determine the structure of the ionosphere along radial lines from the LEO to the GPS satellite, the paper also computes the frequency of underflights and their spatial distributions.
