[Termes IGN] série temporelleIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (Auteur) De nombreuses villes du monde manquent de données et ne peuvent donc pas prévoir avec précision les sécheresses urbaines futures (UD) dans le contexte des changements climatiques. Par conséquent, cette thèse a mis en avant un nouveau cadre pour prédire l’UD future. En couplant des images de satellites et de drones, nous avons présenté deux ensembles de nouvelles méthodes pour l’estimation des eaux de surface disponibles ; en couplant les données issues du satellite GRACE de la NASA et l’ensemble de données GLDAS, nous avons proposé une nouvelle méthode de prévision des eaux souterraines disponibles. Toutes les méthodes ont été vérifiées en utilisant des observations au sol et des données fournies par GRACE dans trois grandes villes du bassin du fleuve Jaune, en Chine. Avec ces méthodes, nous avons reconstitué des séries de données sur les eaux de surface et souterraines disponibles pour les trois villes au cours de la période 1948-2001, lorsque les données disponibles sur l’eau sont manquantes. Avec ces données reconstituées sur la disponibilité de l’eau et les projections de consommation d’eau, nous avons prédit l’UD de trois grandes villes en Chine en 2030 et 2050 en exploitant un réseau neuronal artificiel sur la base de scénarios climatiques CMIP5. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DIndex. décimale : PROJET Mémoires : Rapports de projet - stage des ingénieurs de 2e année Résumé : (Auteur) Le département de cartographie, SIG et télédétection de l’Institut de Géographie (appartenant à l’université Georg-August de Göttingen, Allemagne) se consacre au suivi du changement climatique et des écosystèmes terrestres. Bien que leurs projets de recherche concernent les dynamiques de toute la surface terrestre ainsi que les dimensions humaines du changement climatique, l’étude porte sur un écosystème forestier de la région de Südharz. Cette région appartenant au massif montagneux des Harz (centre-nord de l’Allemagne), autrefois sauvage et riche du point de vue écologique, est peuplée d’épicéas fortement impactés par le réchauffement climatique. Ils souffrent de l’infestation de Scolytes, un coléoptère ravageur profitant de l’affaiblissement des arbres par les sécheresses et du modèle de monoculture pour proliférer et décimer les arbres. Dans ce contexte, les équipes du département de cartographie, SIG et télédétection mettent à profit les outils SIG et de télédétection pour repérer et quantifier les zones atteintes afin d’aider les forestiers à gérer au mieux les écosystèmes. Jusqu’à présent les études reposent principalement sur les images Sentinel-2. Cependant le déploiement de la mission GEDI (The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation) sur la Station Spatiale Internationale (ISS) en 2018 apporte de nouvelles perspectives. GEDI produit les premières observations de télémétrie laser à haute résolution de la structure 3D de la Terre : des mesures précises de la hauteur et de la structure verticale de la canopée ainsi que de l’élévation de la surface. Ces données verticales dont on ne dispose pas avec les images satellites traditionnelles, améliorent considérablement la caractérisation de la biodiversité. Les données GEDI ne sont pas encore utilisées par l’équipe, mais peuvent constituer un réel nid d’information pour de futures recherches. L’objectif est donc d’évaluer leur précision et leur intérêt pour le suivi des milieux forestiers. Pour cela les données GEDI Level 2B (Canopy Cover and Vertical Profile Metrics product) de la zone de Südharz de l’été 2019 et de l’été 2020 sont téléchargées, traitées et visualisées dans un SIG ou via des scripts Python. Les attributs GEDI d’évaluation de la biomasse (PAI, Cover, rh100, FHD) sont comparés à des données terrain fournies par l’administration forestière de l’état de Thuringe (Thüringen) puis à des données Sentinel-2 et enfin à une vérité terrain effectuée durant le stage. Les résultats statistiques de corrélation ainsi que la comparaison des données entre 2019 et 2020 offrent une meilleure appréciation de la qualité et de la pertinence des données appliquées au suivi des écosystèmes. Forests composition is therefore expected to change in the coming decades, which will alter ecosystem functions and biodiversity, with negative ecological and societal consequences for the planet.Tree distribution depends on several demographic traits such as recruitment, growth and mortality that interact across large climatic gradients. Yet, mortality is rising in all forested biomes in the world. In Europe for instance, forest mortality increases towards the climatic trailing edge of the species ranges as a response to drought. These high mortality rates are usually related to a lack of recruitment, which may induce vegetation shifts, but also opening new opportunities for the establishment of exotic invasive species. As demographic trait responses to climate vary across and within species, understanding trait interactions along large climatic gradients is crucial to better predict the impact of climate change on forest productivity, composition and range-shift dynamics.In this work I analyzed tree mortality and recruitment patterns of twenty of the most common native species and two exotic species in European forests and their triggered drivers. To this aim, I used data of 2 million trees from 153 892 plots measured in the National Forest Inventories from France, Spain, Germany, Belgium (Wallonia), Sweden and Finland.In the first chapter, I analyzed tree mortality and showed that the highest mortality occurrence happens in the climatic trailing edge, driven by drought, whereas the intensity of mortality is triggered by competition, drought and high temperatures and was uniformly scattered across species ranges. In addition, the occurrence of mortality was the highest in the trailing edge of temperate species and the lowest in the leading edge for half of the Mediterranean species.In the second chapter I analyzed tree recruitment, showing that for most species, there are no differences in recruitment across species ranges. Recruitment was strongly limited by competition and often depended on age, or growth rate of the plot. Surprisingly, the role of drought in tree recruitment only was evident in interaction with tree competition.In the third chapter, I assessed the invasiveness of two exotic invasive species, Quercus rubra and Robinia pseudoacacia. My results showed that both species are able to recruit new individuals under all other species canopies, to become dominant at the expanse of many trees species and suggested that they are both expanding their ranges northwards and southwards, in part because they are relatively less sensitive to drought than the other species.All together, my results highlight that trees sensitivity to current climate change is trait-dependent and differs across species ranges. The southern part of the species ranges can be shaped by drought-induced mortality, while recruitment is much less affected by drought. This different sensitivity to climate of tree mortality and recruitment suggests that recruitment could counteract the negative effects of climate change to a certain extent and that forests might be more resilient than what was previously thought. Yet, the exotic species expansion is less affected by the surrounding environment than Mediterranean and temperate species and could benefit from climate warming. Hence, the potential help of recruitment for in-situ species range persistence, and the management strategies which could help forests to mitigate future climate change remains to be explored.
