[Termes IGN] pondérationRésumé : (Auteur) Traditional application of Voronoi diagrams for space partitioning results in Voronoi regions, each with a specific area determined by the generators’ relative locations and weights. Particularly in the area of information space (re)construction, however, there is a need for inverse solutions; i.e., finding weights that result in regions with predefined area ratios. In this paper, we formulate an adaptive Voronoi solution and propose a raster-based optimization method for finding the associated weight set. The solution consists of a combination of simple, fixed-point iteration with an optional spatial resolution refinement along the regions’ boundaries using quadtree decomposition. We present the corresponding algorithm and its complexity analysis. The method is successfully tested on a series of ideal–typical cases and the interactions between the adaptive technique and boundary resolution refinement are explored and assessed. [Termes IGN] requête spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) People usually use qualitative terms to express spatial relations, while current geographic information systems (GISs) all use quantitative approaches to store spatial information. The abilities of current GISs to represent and query spatial information about geographic space are limited. Based on the result of a human-subject test of natural-language descriptions of spatial relations between linear geographic objects, this paper defines a series of quantitative indices that are related to natural-language spatial relation terms, and uses these indices to formalize the ambiguous natural-language representation with a decision-tree algorithm. The result indicates that using both topological indices and metric indices can formalize the natural-language spatial predicates better than using only topological indices. The rules extracted from the trees are used to characterize the spatial relations into qualitative description groups. Using these rules, a prototype of an intelligent natural-language interface for the ESRI software ArcGIS that can query spatial relations between two linear objects in natural English language is implemented using SNePS (the Semantic Network Processing System). [Termes IGN] tessellationRésumé : (Auteur) Quantization of spatial objects, which usually means vector-to-raster conversion in GIS and remote sensing, is a basic operation used for handling spatial data from data creation to visualization. Since quantization is an approximation of spatial objects, it inevitably yields errors in measuring their properties such as area, perimeter, diameter, and so forth. This paper discusses the accuracy of a quantized Voronoi diagram, a spatial tessellation generated from a set of points. A measure is proposed to evaluate the accuracy of the area of Voronoi regions calculated after quantization. In one-dimensional space the measure is expressed as an explicit function of the expected number of generators in a cell. In two-dimensional space, on the other hand, the measure is defined by an implicit function, whose approximation is derived in an explicit form. These functions permit us to evaluate the accuracy of quantization in relation to the size of lattice cells and the density of Voronoi generators. This leads to an appropriate choice of a lattice to keep the quality of a quantized Voronoi diagram at a desirable level. [Termes IGN] population urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) We present a geometric and graphic approach to studying spatial patterns of urban hierarchy in the US. The multiplicatively weighted Voronoï diagram is found to be effective for visualizing theoretical regions delineated by socio-economic variables. The population landscape of the continental US demonstrates overall and stepwise patterns reflecting population, neighborhood and distance, with overwhelming influence from huge metropolitan areas. Stepwise exploration and cluster analysis of the spatial pattern reveal an urban hierarchy. Attributes and arrangement are the two important factors of urban hierarchy, with attribute having a stronger local influence and arrangement having a stronger global influence. The study also presents a variation of Zipf's law to visualize the rank-size distribution from tabular and statistical space to map.
