[Termes IGN] restauration d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) This paper develops a knowledge discovery procedure for extracting knowledge of soil-landscape models from a soil map. It has broad relevance to knowledge discovery from other natural resource maps. The procedure consists of four major steps: data preparation, data preprocessing, pattern extraction, and knowledge consolidation. In order to recover true expert knowledge from the error-prone soil maps, our study pays specific attention to the reduction of representation noise in soil maps. The data preprocessing step has exhibited an important role in obtaining greater accuracy. A specific method for sampling pixels based on modes of environmental histograms has proven to be effective in terms of reducing noise and constructing representative sample sets. Three inductive learning algorithms, the See5 decision tree algorithm, Naïve Bayes, and artificial neural network, are investigated for a comparison concerning learning accuracy and result comprehensibility. See5 proves to be an accurate method and produces the most comprehensible results, which are consistent with the rules (expert knowledge) used in producing the soil map. The incorporation of spatial information into the knowledge discovery process is found not only to improve the accuracy of the extracted knowledge, but also to add to the explicitness and extensiveness of the extracted soil-landscape model. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) Multitemporal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image filtering is a useful pre-processing step for many applications that require speckle reduction. Several multitemporal filters are now available with very different characteristics. In this paper, the performance of three multitemporal filters is assessed with respect to statistical and operational criteria. Statistical criteria include measures of bias, noise reduction, and preservation of both spatial and temporal information. Operational criteria evaluate the accuracy of manual detection of geographical features such as points, lines and surfaces. This study was carried out with the help of ten photo-interpreters. It uses a set of seven multitemporal SAR images from the European Remote Sensing 1 (ERS-1) satellite. It provide guidelines to select multitemporal filters according to the application and the subsequent processing. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) Estimates of the amount of atmospheric water vapour derived from algorithms for a ground-based single-channel (21.OGHz) microwave radiometer have been investigated. Ten datasets covering 44 days were used to derive the methods and two other sets (in total 32 days) were used to assess the quality of these. It is shown how the rms estimation error can be reduced by recognizing the rapid variations in sky brightness temperatures during periods when cloud liquid is present. Data was either discarded, guided by the variability, or an adaptive Kalman filter was applied with different parameter values for different degrees of variability. The resulting estimates were compared to the estimates obtained from a dual-channel algorithm (2t.0 and 31.4GHz), which were used as reference. The amount of water vapour was represented as the 'wet delay', the excess radio path length due to the atmospheric water vapour. Applying the Kalman filter to the single-frequency estimates reduced the wet delay rms error from 20 mm to 9 and 14 mm for the two datasets. Further reduction of the rms error was achieved by the removal of data in periods with high variability; discarding about 40% of the data led to rms errors of 5 and 7 mm for the two datasets. [Termes IGN] polarimétrieRésumé : (Auteur) Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are affected by speckle noise, originated by the SAR system's coherent nature. The problem of speckle noise in one-dimensional (1-D) data is already solved, as speckle has a multiplicative characteristic. SAR polarimetry represents an extension to multidimensional data by the use of polarization wave diversity. As a consequence of the existence of a correlation degree between the SAR images, the 1-D speckle noise model cannot be extended to multidimensional SAR data. This paper is devoted to present a completely new speckle noise model for the complex covariance matrix describing polarimetric SAR data in the distributed scatterers case. As will be shown, this new model is able to identify which are the noise mechanisms in all the covariance matrix elements. The speckle noise model is validated by using real L-band polarimetric data acquired with the German E-SAR sensor.
