Although these problems are traditionally solved by approximate methods, this book presents alternative algebraic techniques based on computer algebra tools. This new approach meets such modern challenges as resection by laser techniques, solution of orientation in robotics, transformation and bundle block adjustment in geoinformatics, densification of engineering networks, analytical solution for GPS-meteorology and many other problems. For mathematicians the book provides some practical examples of abstract algebra application and multidimensional scaling. Note de contenu : 1. Introduction

[Termes IGN] terminologieRésumé : (Auteur) This is the first paper in a four-part series considering the fundamental question, "What does the word height really mean ? " National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is embarking on a height modernization program in which, in the future, it will not necessary for NGS to create new or maintain old orthometric height benchmarks. In their stead, NGS will publish measured ellipsoid heights and computed Helmert orthometric heihgts for survey markers. Consequently, practicing surveyors will soon be confronted with coping with these changes and differences between these types of height. Indeed, although "height" is commonly used word, an exact definition of it can be difficult to find. These article will explore the various meanings of height as used in surveying and geodesy and present a precise definition that is based on the physic of gravitational potential, along current best practices for using survey-grade GPS equipement for height measurement. Our goal is to review these basic concepts so that surveyors can avoid potential pitfalls that may be created by the new NGS height control era. The first paper reviews reference ellipsoids and mean sea level datums. The second paper reviews the physics of heights culminating in a simple development of the geoid and explains why mean sea level station are not all the same orthometric height. The third paper introduces geopotential numbers and dynamic heights, explains the correction needed to account for the non-parallelism of equipotential surfaces, and discusses how these correction were used in NAVD 88. The fouth paper presents a review of current best practices for heights measured with GPS. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Problems of precision and accuracy in geographical information systems have often been undervalued. However, these are important issues when trying to avoid inaccurate computations that could distort the final result. A method is described for the Transverse Mercator Projection of the ellipsoid to calculate the necessary number of terms of their series development so that desired accuracy can be achieved. The first part describes one algorithm used to obtain the full development of the formulas by means of a symbolic calculus program. The second part studies the influence of each term in the final result in order to know which terms can be neglected while achieving the desired precision. Finally, the results are applied to a rectangle of 30° width and latitude varying from 30° to 50°. [Termes IGN] regroupement de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a three-dimensional (3-D) interferometric synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging method for moving targets is presented. This imaging method is based on the ISAR principle and the simple observation that all scatterers on a moving target move in tandem. The angular motion parameters in the cross-range directions could be estimated using the overall range profile of the moving target. Registration of the respective complex images at the two (or more) interferometric antennas can then be achieved via compensating the respective echoes at the raw data level, thus avoiding phase-unwrapping processing and image-resampling processing as required by conventional methods. Finally, a 3-D image of the moving target can then be reconstructed from the 3-D spatial coordinates of these scatterers. Furthermore, the method works well even for a target moving in heavily cluttered environments. [Termes IGN] système de référence géodésiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper provides a closed-form solution to the geolocation problem arising in the generation of digital elevation models (DEMs) via both stereo and interferometric synthetic aperture radar techniques. The proposed solution is found with no approximations in an arbitrary Cartesian reference system, thus, efficiently allowing the generation of DEMs in a chosen cartographic projection. Moreover, it is amenable of an easy and precise sensivity analysis that exploits the full three-dimensional nature of the problem, thus being particularly useful when high-squinted and/or crossed-track acquisitions are considered.
