[Termes IGN] géoïdeRésumé : (Auteur) The application of Stokes's formula to determine the geoid height requires that topographic and atmospheric masses be mathematically removed prior to Stokes integration. This corresponds to the applications of the direct topographic and atmospheric effects. For a proper geoid determination, the external masses must then be restored, yielding the indirect effects. Assuming an ellipsoïdal layering of the atmosphere with 15% increase in its density towards the poles, the direct atmospheric effect on the geoid height is estimated to be -5.51 m plus a second-degree zonal harmonic term with an amplitude of 1.1 cm. The indirect effect is +5.50 m and the total geoid correction thus varies between -1.2 cm at the equator to 1.9cm at the poles. Finally, the correction needed to the atmospheric effect if Stokes's formula is used in a spherical approximation, rather than an ellipsoïdal approximation, of the Earth varies between 0.3 cm and 4.0cm at the equator and pole, respectively. [Termes IGN] spectroscopieRésumé : (Auteur) Atmospheric gravity waves play a significant role in the dynamics and thermal balance of the upper atmosphere. In this paper, we present a novel technique for automated and robust calculation of momentum flux of high-frequency quasi-monochromatic wave components from spectroscopic imaging and horizontal radar wind measurements. Our approach uses the two-dimensional (2-D) cross periodogram of two consecutive Doppler-shifted time-differenced (TD) images to identify wave components and estimate intrinsic wave parameters. Besides estimating the average perturbation of dominant waves in the whole field of view, this technique applies 2D short-space Fourier transform to the TD images to identify localized wave events. With the wave parameters acquired, the momentum flux carried by all vertically propagating wave components is calculated using an analytical model relating the measured intensity perturbation to the wave amplitude. This model is tested by comparing wave perturbation amplitudes inferred from spectroscopic images with those from sodium lidar temperature measurements. The proposed technique enables characterization of the variations in the direction and strength of gravity waves with high temporal resolution for each clear data-taking night. The nightly results provide statistical information for investigating seasonal and geographical variations in momentum flux of gravity waves.
• le poids apporté au positionnement dynamique (chapitre 3 entièrement remanié) ;
• un nouveau texte (chapitre 4) sur les applications hors positionnement: transfert de temps, applications météorologiques et mesures d'attitude.Note de contenu : Avant propos / François PEYRET

[Termes IGN] spectroradiomètreRésumé : (Auteur) Although satellite remote sensing techniques have been widely implemented for a variety of applications, using either single or time-series images, few studies have explicitly considered atmospheric effects, and how they can most effectively be minimized. Despite the considerable number of available atmospheric correction algorithms, there is little literature concerning their relative merits. Over water bodies, atmospheric effects account for the majority of the at-satellite measured radiance in the visible bands, and therefore targets of this type provide an opportunity for assessing the effectiveness of the different methods available. This paper reports a study of atmospheric effects and their correction, using multi-spectral satellite remote sensing data for an area to the west of London that includes eight large water reservoirs and a major international airport (Heathrow). Through comparisons of reflectance within a time series of 12 Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) images, the overall impact of atmospheric contributions is shown. The available atmospheric correction literature is then reviewed, and the methods applied to the satellite imagery of the reservoirs. The results are compared with reflectances acquired using a field spectro-radiometer. A critical appraisal of the results, and of problems encountered in applying the various methods, leads to an evaluation of their value in practice. In particular, we investigate the application of the Kriging geostatistical technique to obtain regularly spaced IPWV values. The horizontal spatial structure r water vapor retrieved by SSM/I is explored by computing-variograms that provide a measure of dissimilarity between pairs IPWV values for the region of interest. Because the water vapor density decreases with height, the GPS station elevation - accounted for in the interpolation procedure. In this respect, the potential of the Kriging with external drift relative to the linary Kriging is evaluated by applying a test based on the validation approach.The case studies are presented and qualitatively compared to the corresponding Meteosat infrared images. A quantitative comparison with an independent source of information, such as IPWV computed from radiosonde observations and from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts only, is also performed.
