Meanwhile, there are few amongst those who apply remote sensing techniques in their particular branches of science and consulting equipped to research the worrying implications of such distortions. The convening of this workshop focussing on the subject was particularly welcome therefore, as it enabled the small but very important group of concerned specialists in the United Kingdom to come together to discuss their problems and explain how they have approached them. The sessions also allowed time for participants to show how they had derived correction factors which they have found useful and the papers published here reflect the type of work being undertaken in the fields of land, oceanographic and atmospheric applications. By far the most important feature of the meeting, however, was the opportunity which it provided for members of the remote sensing community concerned with applications to have their ideas reviewed by scientists engaged in research and development with a view to the development of new sensors. It is hoped that the points raised in discussion will in due course find their way into the literature. Note de contenu : Foreword

[Termes IGN] water vapour radiometerIndex. décimale : 24.30 Rayonnement électromagnétique Résumé : (Auteur) This report deals with the excess delay of radio waves penetrating the neutral atmosphere of the earth, especially the delay due to water vapour, and reviews the state of the art of sounding techniques and instrumentation, in particular microwave radiometry. The physical background of the water vapour radiometer (WVR) method is presented and seven different types of WVR are described in detail. The expected accuracies of wet path delays vary with the local climate as well as with instrumental errors and the operating frequencies of the WVR. It is shown that errors in the wet path delay for zenith observations range from O.M to 0.9 cm rms for optimum WVR frequencies and instrumental errors of 0.5 K rms. Two different WVR designs - one with high accuracy and one with low cost (but less accurate) - are proposed for the ESA POPSAT system.
