Landslides are a constant danger that compromises the general welfare of society. Landslides mapping is especially important for urban areas or development plans. The innovative aspect of this study is the creation of the Topographic Connection Method (TPCM) to automatically map landslides using two types of landslides 1) falls and 2) flows. TPCM cartography results were compared to a previously proven method (Contour Connection Method), as well as to the manual inventory method. Each method was run four times to locate changes through time by using satellite imagery, digital elevations models and 3D relief visualizations with data covering a period from 2012 to 2017. Results showed both falls and flows with all three methods and demonstrated that TPCM can improve mapping accuracy by up to 14%. [Termes IGN] ville durableRésumé : (auteur) Recently, the severe intensification of atmospheric carbon has highlighted the importance of urban tree contributions in atmospheric carbon mitigations in city areas considering sustainable urban green planning and management systems. Explicit and timely information on urban trees and their roles in the atmospheric Carbon Stock (CS) are essential for policymakers to take immediate actions to ameliorate the effects of deforestation and their worsening outcomes. In this study, a detailed methodology for urban tree CS calibration and mapping was developed for the small urban area of Sassuolo in Italy. For dominant tree species classification, a remote sensing approach was applied, utilizing a high-resolution WV3 image. Five dominant species were identified and classified by applying the Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) approach with an overall accuracy of 78%. The CS calibration was done by utilizing an allometric model based on the field data of tree dendrometry—i.e., Height (H) and Diameter at Breast Height (DBH). For geometric measurements, a terrestrial photogrammetric approach known as Structure-from-Motion (SfM) was utilized. Out of 22 randomly selected sample plots of 100 square meters (10 m × 10 m) each, seven plots were utilized to validate the results of the CS calibration and mapping. In this study, CS mapping was done in an efficient and convenient way, highlighting higher CS and lower CS zones while recognizing the dominant tree species contributions. This study will help city planners initiate CS mapping and predict the possible CS for larger urban regions to ensure a sustainable urban green management system. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (auteur) The emerging single-photon laser scanning has made technological breakthrough in the collection of airborne laser scanning data. In principle, single-photon systems require only one detected photon for successful ranging. Further, the point density on the ground can be 10–100 times higher for single-photon lidar data than that obtained with multi-photon systems at the same flight altitude. This has great potential to reduce operation costs. Single-photon lidar technology is assumed to be the best for data acquisition when high point densities are required over very large areas, or when improvements in measurement rates can significantly reduce data acquisition costs, such as in nationwide laser scanning programmes, where the whole country is repeatedly covered with data every 5–10 years. This study investigates single-photon lidar and conventional multi-photon laser scanning data for their potential in characterizing ground and forest attributes. Performance is evaluated in a boreal forest by a comparative analysis, where single-photon lidar measurements with SPL100 (Leica/Hexagon) from two flight heights (1900 m and 3800 m) are compared with data from the Optech Titan (400 m) multi-photon airborne laser scanning (ALS) under summer conditions (i.e. leaves on). We found that SPL100 from both altitudes provides forest attribute estimates with comparable accuracy to that of Optech Titan from 400 m using an area-based method. This demonstrates that point density and flight altitude do not have significant impact on forest attribute estimation using the area-based approach. As a result, SPL100 is a cost-efficient alternative to a conventional laser scanner for forest inventories at large scale. There are systematic differences in behavior of the data sets due to differences in ranging sensitivity, beam size, and point density. We observed a higher proportion of ground returns in the SPL100 (3800 m) than in SPL100 (1900 m) data. Both SPL100 data in general produced a higher proportion of ground returns than Titan single channel did in structurally more homogeneous and one layer stands while higher proportion of ground returns from Titan than from SPL100 data in multi-layer stands. Forest structure and flight altitude has a notable impact on the distribution of points and further characteristics of the vertical structures. The pulse of Titan sensor penetrated deeper into the canopy than SPL100. [Termes IGN] Pacifique (océan)Résumé : (auteur) The study investigated geomorphology of the Japan Trench located east of Japan, Pacific Ocean. A high-resolution GEBCO Gridded Bathymetric Dataset was used for modeling, mapping and visualization. The study aimed to compare and analyse variations in the geomorphic structures of the two parts of the trench and to visualize variations in the geological, geophysical and bathymetric settings. Technically, the cartographic work was performed using scripting based on the Generic Mapping Toolset (GMT). Modelled cross-sectioning orthogonal profiles transecting the trench in a perpendicular direction were automatically digitized and graphed in the two segments. The results of the bathymetric analysis shown that the southern part is shallower: with deeper values in absolute (139 samples between –7000 to –8000 m) and statistical records (the most frequent values are within –5500 to –5800 m) comparing to the northern segment (–5300 to –5500 m). The geomorphological analysis shows a more complicated relief in the northern part of the trench, which has a higher seismic activity. The southern part has a gentler slope on the Honshu island side. The geoid modeling along the trench ranges in 0–20 mGal. The highest values are recorded by the Honshu Island (>40 mGal). The rest of the area has rather moderate undulations (20–40 mGal). [Termes IGN] ville durableRésumé : (auteur) Mitigating urban heat island (UHI) effects, especially under climate change, is necessary for the promotion of urban sustainability. Shade is one of the most important functions provided by urban trees for mitigating UHI. However, the cooling effect of tree shade has not been adequately investigated. In this study, we used a simple and straightforward method to quantify the spatial and temporal variation of tree shade and examined its effect on land surface temperature (LST). We used the hillshade function in a geographic information system to quantify the spatiotemporal patterns of tree shade by integrating sun location and tree height. Relationships between shade and LST were then compared in two cities, Tampa, Florida and New York City (NYC), New York. We found that: (1) Hillshade function combining the sun location and tree height can accurately capture the spatial and temporal variation of tree shade; (2) Tree shade, particularly at 07:30, has significant cooling effect on LST in Tampa and NYC; and (3) Shade has a stronger cooling effect in Tampa than in NYC, which is most likely due to the differences in the ratio of tree canopy to impervious surface cover, the spatial arrangements of trees and buildings, and their relative heights. Comparing the cooling effects of tree shade in two cities, this study provides important insights for urban planners for UHI mitigation in different cities.
