[Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Unoccupied aerial vehicles (UAV) with RGB-cameras are affordable and versatile devices for the generation of a series of remote sensing products that can be used for forest inventory tasks, such as creating high-resolution orthomosaics and canopy height models. The latter may serve purposes including tree species identification, forest damage assessments, canopy height or timber stock assessments. Besides flight and image acquisition parameters such as image overlap, flight height, and weather conditions, the focal length, which determines the opening angle of the camera lens, is a parameter that influences the reconstruction quality. Despite its importance, the effect of focal length on the quality of 3D reconstructions of forests has received little attention in the literature. Shorter focal lengths result in more accurate distance estimates in the nadir direction since small angular errors lead to large positional errors in narrow opening angles. In this study, 3D reconstructions of four UAV-acquisitions with different focal lengths (21, 35, 50, and 85 mm) on a 1 ha mature mixed forest plot were compared to reference point clouds derived from high quality Terrestrial Laser Scans. Shorter focal lengths (21 and 35 mm) led to a higher agreement with the TLS scans and thus better reconstruction quality, while at 50 mm, quality losses were observed, and at 85 mm, the quality was considerably worse. F1-scores calculated from a voxel representation of the point clouds amounted to 0.254 with 35 mm and 0.201 with 85 mm. The precision with 21 mm focal length was 0.466 and 0.302 with 85 mm. We thus recommend a focal length no longer than 35 mm during UAV Structure from Motion (SfM) data acquisition for forest management practices. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) The coastal zone, a highly dynamic and complex environment, has important ecological and jurisdictional implications for governments and coastal managers. Based on the CORINE Land Cover classification system, this paper examined the effects of land use and land cover change (LULC) on the coastlines' dynamics along the ∼24 km barrier island of Nador lagoon on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco during a period of 62 years (1954–2016). The study utilized high-resolution orthoimages in the geographic information system (GIS) environment to characterize coastline evolution and LULC changes. The evolution of the coastline was assessed using a GIS tool, in particular the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS). The net rates of coastline change were calculated by using statistical methods: the End Point Rate (EPR) and the Linear Regression Rate (LRR). Results concerning the LULC changes showed that agricultural area and beach/dune classes decreased over the entire study period (62 years) by 11.14% and 28.45%, respectively. Urban fabric, shrub, forest, and saltmarsh/peat bog classes increased during the 62 years of evaluation by 2.69%, 19.92%, 16.77%, and 0.19%, respectively. Results regarding coastal analysis indicated that the accretion and erosion processes along the barrier island of the Nador lagoon (∼24km) were observed at 45% (10.6 km) and 55% (12.8 km) of the coastline, respectively. The beaches of Oulad Zehra and Oulad Aissa were characterized by erosion (−0.58 m/yr to −0.57 m/yr respectively), while accretion was observed on the beaches of Boukana and Kariat Arkmane at rates of +2.15 m/yr and +0.82 m/yr, respectively. This study highlighted that natural and anthropogenic processes have a strong influence on the erosion/accretion trends identified along the barrier island of Nador lagoon. The changes in LULC have affected the barrier island of the lagoon in two different forms: (1) a significant spatial conversion due to dune reforestation and (2) a fundamental spatial modification that affects the sea-lagoon connection (inlet) and the construction of new hard engineering structures. [Termes IGN] standard OGCRésumé : (auteur) As one of the earliest forms of remote sensing, aerial photography has been regarded as an important part of the mapmaking process. Aerial photos, especially historical aerial photos, provide significant amount of valuable information for many applications and fields. However, due to limited funding support, most historical aerial photos have not been digitized and georeferenced yet, which substantially limits their utility for today’s computer-based image processing and analysis. Traditionally, historical aerial photos are georeferenced with desktop GIS software applications. However, this method is expensive, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. To address these limitations, this research developed a custom-built online georeferencing tool to enable georeferencing digitized historical aerial photos in a web environment, which is able to georeference historical aerial photos in a rapid and cost-effective manner. To evaluate the georeferencing performance, a set of 50 historical aerial photos were georeferenced with not only the developed online georeferencing tool but also two commercial desktop software programs. Research results revealed the custom-built online georeferencing tool provided the highest degree of accuracy while maximizing its accessibility. [Termes IGN] TéhéranRésumé : (auteur) The purpose of this investigation is to develop an optimal model to flood susceptibility mapping in the Kan watershed, Tehran, Iran. Therefore, in this study, three Bayesian optimization hyper-parameter algorithms including Upper confidence bound (UCB), Probability of improvement (PI) and Expected improvement (EI) in order to Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) machine learning model optimization and Extreme randomize tree (ERT) model for modeling flood hazard were used. In order to perform flood susceptibility mapping, 118 historic flood locations were identified and analyzed using 17 geo-environmental explanatory variables to predict flooding susceptibility. Flood locations data were divided into 70% for training and 30% for testing of models developed. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve parameters were used to evaluate the performance of the models. The evaluation results based on the criterion area under curve (AUC) in the testing stage showed that the ERT and XGB models have efficiencies of 91.37% and 91.95%, respectively. The evaluation of the efficiency of Bayesian hyperparameters optimization methods on the XGB model also showed that these methods increase the efficiency of the XGB model, so that the model efficiency using these methods EI-XGB, POI-XGB and UCB-XGB based on the AUC in the testing stage were 95.89%, 96.87% and 96.38%, respectively. The results of the relative importance of the five models shows that the variables of elevation and distance from the river are the significant compared to other variables in predicting flood hazard in the Kan watershed.
