[Termes IGN] vue perspectiveRésumé : (Auteur) Large collections of images have become readily available through modern digital catalogs, from sources as diverse as historical photographs, aerial surveys, or user-contributed pictures. Exploiting the quantitative information present in such wide-ranging collections can greatly benefit studies that follow the evolution of landscape features over decades, such as measuring areas of glaciers to study their shrinking under climate change. However, many available images were taken with low-quality lenses and unknown camera parameters. Useful quantitative data may still be extracted, but it becomes important to both account for imperfect optics, and estimate the uncertainty of the derived quantities. In this paper, we present a method to address both these goals, and apply it to the estimation of the area of a landscape feature traced as a polygon on the image of interest. The technique is based on a Bayesian formulation of the camera calibration problem. First, the probability density function (PDF) of the unknown camera parameters is determined for the image, based on matches between 2D (image) and 3D (world) points together with any available prior information. In a second step, the posterior distribution of the feature area of interest is derived from the PDF of camera parameters. In this step, we also model systematic errors arising in the polygon tracing process, as well as uncertainties in the digital elevation model. The resulting area PDF therefore accounts for most sources of uncertainty. We present validation experiments, and show that the model produces accurate and consistent results. We also demonstrate that in some cases, accounting for optical lens distortions is crucial for accurate area determination with consumer-grade lenses. The technique can be applied to many other types of quantitative features to be extracted from photographs when careful error estimation is important. The processing of this huge amount of information, including spatial properties, which are frequently represented in heterogeneous ways, is a challenging task that has boosted research in the big data area in an attempt to investigate cases and propose new solutions for dealing with its peculiarities. In the literature, many different proposals and approaches for facing the problem have been proposed, addressing different goals and different types of users. However, most are obtained by customizing existing approaches which were originally developed for the processing of big data of the alphanumeric type, without any specific support for spatial or spatiotemporal properties. Thus, the proposed solutions can exploit the parallelism provided by these kinds of systems, but without taking into account, in a proficient way, the space and time dimensions that intrinsically characterize the analyzed datasets. As described in the literature, current solutions include: (i) the on-top approach, where an underlying system for traditional big datasets is used as a black box while spatial processing is added through the definition of user-defined functions that are specified on top of the underlying system; (ii) the from-scratch approach, where a completely new system is implemented for a specific application context; and (iii) the built-in approach, where an existing solution is extended by injecting spatial data functions into its core. This book aims at promoting new and innovative studies, proposing new architectures or innovative evolutions of existing ones, and illustrating experiments on current technologies in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of distributed and cluster systems when they deal with spatiotemporal data. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) Geo-spatial analysis has become an essential component of hydrological studies to process and examine geo-spatial data such as hydrological variables (e.g., precipitation and discharge) and basin characteristics (e.g., DEM and land use land cover). The advancement of the data acquisition technique helps accumulate geo-spatial data with more extensive spatial coverage than traditional in-situ observations. The development of geo-spatial analytic methods is beneficial for the processing and analysis of multi-source data in a more efficient and reliable way for a variety of research and practical issues in hydrology. This book is a collection of the articles of a published Special Issue Geo-Spatial Analysis in Hydrology in the journal ISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information. The topics of the articles range from the improvement of geo-spatial analytic methods to the applications of geo-spatial analysis in emerging hydrological issues. The results of these articles show that traditional hydrological/hydraulic models coupled with geo-spatial techniques are a way to make streamflow simulations more efficient and reliable for flood-related decision making. Geo-spatial analysis based on more advanced methods and data is a reliable resolution to obtain high-resolution information for hydrological studies at fine spatial scale. 2- Integrated hazard modeling for simulating torrential stream response to flash flood events
