[Termes IGN] risque naturelRésumé : (auteur) Soil erosion is a type of land degradation caused by the interactive interaction of numerous factors, such as natural and socioeconomic conditions of a particular watershed. In this study, a comprehensive integrated methodology was used to evaluate the water erosion hazard in the Zhuxi watershed in Southern China, which is greatly affected by eroded soil. Ten indicators were selected, and a thematic layer map was generated for each indicator using Geographic Information System (GIS). The weight of each evaluation indicator was determined by combining analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with entropy method. Results show that the east and west sections of the Zhuxi watershed have very low and low grades of soil erosion hazards, respectively, and the middle part has the highest hazard. More than 60% of the area has high erosion hazard (moderate to very high). The intensity of soil erosion is lower than its hazard level, especially in high-grade hazard. The obtained results for erosion hazard level can be used to develop conservation strategies for the Zhuxi watershed. This study evaluates soil erosion hazard and offers reference for soil erosion control. [Termes IGN] transformation de HelmertRésumé : (auteur) Historical imagery is characterized by high spatial resolution and stereoscopic acquisitions, providing a valuable resource for recovering 3D land-cover information. Accurate geo-referencing of diachronic historical images by means of self-calibration remains a bottleneck because of the difficulty to find sufficient amount of feature correspondences under evolving landscapes. In this research, we present a fully automatic approach to detecting feature correspondences between historical images taken at different times (i.e., inter-epoch), without auxiliary data required. Based on relative orientations computed within the same epoch (i.e., intra-epoch), we obtain DSMs (Digital Surface Model) and incorporate them in a rough-to-precise matching. The method consists of: (1) an inter-epoch DSMs matching to roughly co-register the orientations and DSMs (i.e, the 3D Helmert transformation), followed by (2) a precise inter-epoch feature matching using the original RGB images. The innate ambiguity of the latter is largely alleviated by narrowing down the search space using the co-registered data. With the inter-epoch feature correspondences, we refine the image orientations and quantitatively evaluate the results (1) with DoD (Difference of DSMs), (2) with ground check points, and (3) by quantifying ground displacement due to an earthquake. We demonstrate that our method: (1) can automatically georeference diachronic historical images; (2) can effectively mitigate systematic errors induced by poorly estimated camera parameters; (3) is robust to drastic scene changes. Compared to the state-of-the-art, our method improves the image georeferencing accuracy by a factor of 2. The proposed methods are implemented in MicMac, a free, open-source photogrammetric software. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) The idea of virtual time machines in digital environments like hand-held virtual reality or four-dimensional (4D) geographic information systems requires an accurate positioning and orientation of urban historical images. The browsing of large repositories to retrieve historical images and their subsequent precise pose estimation is still a manual and time-consuming process in the field of Cultural Heritage. This contribution presents an end-to-end pipeline from finding relevant images with utilization of content-based image retrieval to photogrammetric pose estimation of large historical terrestrial image datasets. Image retrieval as well as pose estimation are challenging tasks and are subjects of current research. Thereby, research has a strong focus on contemporary images but the methods are not considered for a use on historical image material. The first part of the pipeline comprises the precise selection of many relevant historical images based on a few example images (so called query images) by using content-based image retrieval. Therefore, two different retrieval approaches based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) are tested, evaluated, and compared with conventional metadata search in repositories. Results show that image retrieval approaches outperform the metadata search and are a valuable strategy for finding images of interest. The second part of the pipeline uses techniques of photogrammetry to derive the camera position and orientation of the historical images identified by the image retrieval. Multiple feature matching methods are used on four different datasets, the scene is reconstructed in the Structure-from-Motion software COLMAP, and all experiments are evaluated on a newly generated historical benchmark dataset. A large number of oriented images, as well as low error measures for most of the datasets, show that the workflow can be successfully applied. Finally, the combination of a CNN-based image retrieval and the feature matching methods SuperGlue and DISK show very promising results to realize a fully automated workflow. Such an automated workflow of selection and pose estimation of historical terrestrial images enables the creation of large-scale 4D models. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Due to its high ranging accuracy, spaceborne laser altimetry technology can improve the accuracy of satellite stereo mapping without ground control points. In the past, full-waveform ICE, CLOUD, and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) laser altimeter data have been used as one of the main data sources for global elevation control. As a second-generation satellite, ICESat-2 is equipped with an altimeter using photon counting mode. This can further improve the application capability for stereo mapping because of the six laser beams with high along-track repetition frequency, which can provide more detailed ground contour descriptions. Previous studies have addressed how to extract high-accuracy elevation control points from ICESat data. However, these methods cannot be directly applied to ICESat-2 data because of the different modes of the laser altimeters. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a method using comprehensive evaluation labels that can extract high-accuracy elevation control points that meet the different level elevation accuracy requirements for large scale mapping from the ICESat-2 land-vegetation along-track product. The method was verified using two airborne lidar data sets. In flat, hilly, and mountainous areas, by using our method to extract the terrain elevation, the root-mean-square error of elevation control points decrease from 1.249–2.094 m, 2.237–3.225 m, and 2.791–4.822 m to 0.262–0.429 m, 0.484–0.596 m, and 0.611–1.003 m, respectively. The results show that the extraction elevations meet the required accuracy for large scale mapping. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Co-registration of aerial imagery and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data is quite challenging because the different imaging mechanisms produce significant geometric and radiometric distortions between the two multimodal data sources. To address this problem, we propose a robust and effective coarse-to-fine registration method that is conducted in two stages utilizing spatial constraints and Gabor structural features. In the first stage, the LiDAR point cloud data is transformed into an intensity map that is used as the reference image. Then, coarse registration is completed by designing a partition-based Features from Accelerated Segment Test (FAST) operator to extract the uniformly distributed interest points in the aerial images and thereafter performing a local geometric correction based on the collinearity equations using the exterior orientation parameters (EoPs). The coarse registration aims to provide a reliable spatial geometry relationship for the subsequent fine registration and is designed to eliminate rotation and scale changes, as well as making only a few translation differences exist between the images. In the second stage, a novel feature descriptor called multi-Scale and multi-Directional Features of odd Gabor (SDFG) is first built to capture the multi-scale and multi-directional structural properties of the images. Then, the three-dimensional (3D) phase correlation (PC) of the SDFG descriptor is established to detect the control points (CPs) between the aerial and LiDAR intensity image in the frequency domain, where the image matching is accelerated by the 3D Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technique. Finally, the obtained CPs not only are employed to refine the EoPs, but also are used to achieve the fine registration of the aerial images and LiDAR data. We conduct experiments to verify the robustness of the proposed registration method using three sets of aerial images and LiDAR data with different scene coverage. Experimental results show that the proposed method is robust to geometric distortions and radiometric changes. Moreover, it achieves the registration accuracy of less than 2 pixels for all cases, which outperforms the current four state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating its superior registration performance.
