In this context, multi-temporal airborne LiDAR data has been considered an effective alternative since it has some advantages over conventional photogrammetry. Despite several works in the literature, the automatic class definition with great accuracy and performance remains a challenge in change detection. The developed strategies usually explore training samples or empirical thresholds to discriminate the classes. To overcome this limitation, we proposed an automatic building change detection method based on Otsu algorithm and median planarity attribute computed from eigenvalues. The main contribution corresponds to the automatic and unsupervised identification of building changes. The experiments were conducted using airborne LiDAR data from two epochs: 2012 and 2014. From qualitative and quantitative analysis, the robustness of the proposed method in detecting building changes in urban areas was evaluated, presenting completeness and correctness around 99% and 76%, respectively. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) [Introduction] ... We propose a fully automatic approach to computing robust inter-epoch feature correspondences. Our method consists of two steps: a rough co-registration by finding feature correspondences between DSMs (Digital Surface Model) derived within single epochs, and a precise feature matching on original RGB images. Our main contributions include:
- Rough-to-precise matching strategy that helps to drastically reduce ambiguity. In particular, we use the depth information to roughly co-register our epochs. The 3D landscape is globally stable over time and provides sufficient correspondences through time. Once co-registered, we levarage the 3D a priori to narrow down the search space in precise matching.
- Upscaling of the learning based feature matching algorithms to high resolution imagery. To do that, we introduced an image tiling scheme.
In the following we present the methodology and some experiments. If you are interested in using our method, please refer to the source code of MicMac Github 4, as well as 2 jupyter tutorials 5 6. We also provide an introduction video 7, slides 8 and project website 9. [Termes IGN] télédétection par lidarRésumé : (auteur) Forest mensuration remains critical in managing our forests sustainably, however, capturing such measurements remains costly, time-consuming and provides minimal amounts of information such as diameter at breast height (DBH), location, and height. Plot scale remote sensing techniques show great promise in extracting detailed forest measurements rapidly and cheaply, however, they have been held back from large-scale implementation due to the complex and time-consuming workflows required to utilize them. This work is focused on describing and evaluating an approach to create a robust, sensor-agnostic and fully automated forest point cloud measurement tool called the Forest Structural Complexity Tool (FSCT). The performance of FSCT is evaluated using 49 forest plots of terrestrial laser scanned (TLS) point clouds and 7022 destructively sampled manual diameter measurements of the stems. FSCT was able to match 5141 of the reference diameter measurements fully automatically with mean, median and root mean squared errors (RMSE) of 0.032 m, 0.02 m, and 0.103 m respectively. A video demonstration is also provided to qualitatively demonstrate the diversity of point cloud datasets that the tool is capable of measuring. FSCT is provided as open source, with the goal of enabling plot scale remote sensing techniques to replace most structural forest mensuration in research and industry. Future work on this project will seek to make incremental improvements to this methodology to further improve the reliability and accuracy of this tool in most high-resolution forest point clouds. Such large-scale 3D data capturing can be conducted effectively by combining structure-from-motion and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Using a RTK-GNSS equipped UAV, 22 repeated weekly campaigns were conducted at two altitudes in various conditions. The photogrammetric approach yielded 3D models, which were compared to the terrestrial laser scanning based ground truth. Better than 2.8 cm geometry RMSE was consistently achieved using integrated georeferencing. It is concluded that the RTK-GNSS based georeferencing enables reaching better than 5 cm geometry accuracy by utilising at least one ground control point. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) In the case of tree species delineation with very high spatial resolution (VHR) images, is desirable that each segment corresponds to one individual tree crown (ITC). However, in order to have a segmentation algorithm that generates segments matching to ITCs, its parameters ought to be properly tuned. Aiming to avoid time-consuming trial-and-error procedures associated with this task, some initiatives for the automatic search of segmentation parameters have been developed, such as metaheuristic methods. The objective of this work was to test the automatic tuning of segmentation parameters of three segmentation algorithms for the delineation of ITCs belonging to a native endangered species in a subtropical forest area, comparing this method with the traditional trial-and-error approach. Two datasets (WorldView-2 and an orthoimage) and three segmentation algorithms (multiresolution, mean-shift and graph-based) were tested. For the automatic approach, a hybrid metaheuristic method was applied to accomplish the automatic search of parameters for the segmentation algorithms, while for the trial-and-error, a visual assessment was conducted for each set of parameters tested. Four supervised metrics were used to assess the quality of the segmentation results for the optimization approach and for the final set of parameters chosen in the trial-and-error approach. Results showed that none of the algorithms, datasets or approaches differ too much. The evaluation metrics values were lower, indicating that the reference ITCs polygons matched with the segmentation results. Despite the similar results, the automatic tuning of segmentation parameters proved to be a feasible alternative to reduce the subjectivity and the human effort in the choice of segmentation parameters as compared to the trial-and error approach.
