[Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Terrain undulations affect the geometric and radiometric quality of synthetic aperture radar images. The correction of these effects becomes indispensable when quantitative image analysis is performed with respect to the derivation of geo- and biophysical parameters. The paper presents a rigorous approach for geometric and radiometric correction of SAR images. Using a digital elevation model, the imaging geometry is reconstructed and is used to perform geometric and radiometric correction of terrain induced distortions. The importance of a stringent radiometric correction based on the integration of the image brightness is emphasized. The approach guarantees that the energy contained in the image data is preserved throughout the geocoding process. The resulting backscattering images are fully terrain corrected and can be used for further quantitative investigations and may also improve qualitative studies as e.g. land cover classifications. The technique is applicable for different sensor types and image products, including already geocoded SAR images. The effect of different resolutions of digital elevation models used for the correction of the backscattering coefficient is investigated. This paper presents an experiment using a circular neighbourhood to calculate slope gradient. Comparisons of the results from a circular neighbourhood with the results from some traditional methods show that (a) for a smooth surface, the result from a circular neighbourhood is more accurate than that from a square neighbourhood, (b) a circular neighbourhood is generally more sensitive to noise in the input DEM than a square neighbourhood, and (c) in a validation using field measurements, the circular neighbourhood performs better than the square neighbourhood when the ratio of user-specified neighbourhood size to cell size is high. [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (Auteur) Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are traditionally acquired from a stereo pair of aerial photographs sequentially captured by an airborne metric camera. Standard DEM extraction techniques can be naturally extended to satellite imagery, but the particular characteristics of satellite imaging can cause difficulties. The spacecraft ephemeris with respect to the ground site during image collects is the most important factor in the elevation extraction process. When the angle of separation between the stereo images is small, the extraction process typically produces measurements with low accuracy, while a large angle of separation can cause an excessive number of erroneous points in the DEM from occlusion of ground areas. The use of three or more images registered to the same ground area can potentially reduce these problems and improve the accuracy of the extracted DEM. The pointing capability of some sensors, such as the Multispectral Thermal Imager (MTI), allows for multiple collects of the same area from different perspectives. This functionality of MTI makes it a good candidate for the implementation of a DEM extraction algorithm using multiple images for improved accuracy. Evaluation of this capability and development of algorithms to geometrically model the MTI sensor and extract DEMs from multi-look MTI imagery are described in this paper. An RMS elevation error of 6.3-meters is achieved using 11 ground test points, while the MTI band has a 5-meter ground sample distance. Such a work traditionally starts out with a change detection phase. A subsequent update phase is then carried out to register changes in the up-to-date database. The first phase is by far the most costly and plodding, as it has until now required field or visual inspection (of orthophotos). The main goal of this paper is to present a new method for detecting changes in the building layer of a 2D cadastral database. This method aims at giving potential changes to a human operator for subsequent validation and update registration. In this paper, we propose a new workflow for the change detection process, by splitting it into 2 separate steps. The first step consists in verifying automatically buildings through a hypothesizeand verify process: the initial description of the database is used to guide the change detection process. The second step consists in extracting new buildings from geometric considerations. In this paper, the method is tested and assessed in a densely built-up area. A specific methodology is firstly employed to estimate the best parameters to use in the system and also to characterise its performance. Results are secondly assessed and show the high potential of our system in such a context.
