[Termes IGN] représentation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Drumlins are sedimentary geological features that indicate the final direction of glacier movement; as a result, they are of great interest in understanding past glacial events. In southern Ontario alone, thousands of drumlins have been mapped and interpreted remotely through the use of aerial imagery or topographic maps. These are often paired with digital elevation models (DEMs) and/or contour maps offering detailed information about the area of study. This paper presents the results of a change-detection study that used maps of different vintages of the drumlin-rich area around Lake Simcoe in southern Ontario. Two topographic maps and two DEMs, each with contours at 25-ft (7.6-m) and 10-m intervals, were compared in three regions: (A) the urban region in the city of Orillia, overlying sand plains; (B) the area east of Orillia, on top of clay plains; and (C) the region south-east of Lake Simcoe, overlying till plains. The 7.6-m contour topographic maps and DEMs display comparable levels of detail; however, over time the drumlins appear to erode, likely a product of the underlying sediment in combination with urbanization. The 10-m contour topographic maps display less detail than DEMs of the same resolution, suggesting that the popular topographic maps are not the most reliable method of mapping drumlins. [Termes IGN] WikimapiaRésumé : (auteur) There currently exists a wide variety of online resources providing mapping infrastructures and geographic information. Most web-based map services, such as Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps and Bing Maps, are mostly based on data that is collected by authoritative mapping agencies. Alternatively, some relatively new web-map services, such as OpenStreetMap (OSM) and Wikimapia, are mostly based on volunteered data collected by the public (e.g. crowdsourced mapping). Although such volunteered-based map services platforms show an increasing planimetric (2D) accuracy, completeness and update-rate of their mapping infrastructure, surprisingly enough, there is a lack of comparable data and accuracy measures in respect to the third dimension, i.e. height; more specifically, the topographic representation that is based on the volunteered collected data. Most of these web services still rely on existing open-source authoritative topographic infrastructures, and not on data collected by the volunteers. Moreover, topographic information that is open to the public and is free to use, e.g. advanced spaceborne thermal emission and reflection radiometer and shuttle radar topography mission, is regularly available with relatively low height accuracy (not better than 5 m) and low planimetric resolution (over 30 m). Volunteered data, on the other hand, collected by individuals that are situated ‘all over’ the globe can offer with new capabilities and data characteristics having potentially higher qualities. This research proposes to examine the feasibility of using crowdsourced volunteered geographic information working paradigm for the task of producing a reliable digital terrain model (DTM) infrastructure for general use. This is achieved by collecting GPS observations that are available from VG data sources, while applying a 2D Kalman filter-based algorithm, aimed at reducing noise and ambiguities. This paper presents this methodology, with preliminary analysis results achieved by this implementation, showing the feasibility of this working methodology, having good results and accuracy of the DTM generated. [Termes IGN] routeRésumé : (auteur) This paper proposes a pipeline to produce road orthophoto and DTM from Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS). For the ortho, modern laser scanners provide a reflectance information allowing for high quality grayscale images, at a much finer resolution than aerial photography can offer. For DTM, MLS offers a much higher accuracy and density than aerial products. This increased precision and resolution leverages new applications for both ortho and DEM. The first task is to filter ground vs non ground, then an interpolation is conducted to build image tiles from the filtered points. Finally, multiple layers are registered and blended to allow for seamless fusion. Our proposed approach achieves high quality products and scaling up is demonstrated. [Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) The TanDEM-X mission (TDM) is a spaceborne radar interferometer which delivers a global digital surface model (DSM) with an unprecedented spatial resolution. This allows resolving objects above ground such as buildings. Extracting and characterizing those objects in an automated manner represents a challenging problem but opens simultaneously a broad range of large-area applications. In this paper, we discuss and evaluate the suitability of morphological filters (MFs) for the derivation of normalized DSMs from the TDM in complex urban environments and introduce a novel region-growing-based progressive MF procedure. This approach is jointly proposed and can be combined with a postclassification processing scheme to specifically allow for a viable reconstruction of urban morphology in a challenging terrain. The filter approach comprises a multistep procedure using concepts of morphological image filtering, region growing, and interpolation techniques. Therefore, it extends the idea of progressive MFs. The latter aim to identify nonground pixels in the DSM by gradually increasing the size of a structuring element and applying iteratively an elevation difference threshold. After the identification of initial nonground pixels, here, potential nonground pixels are identified within each iteration, and their similarity with respect to neighboring nonground pixels is assessed. Pixels are finally labeled as nonground if a constraint is fulfilled. The postclassification processing scheme adapts techniques of object-based image analyses to further refine regions of classified nonground pixels. Digital terrain models are subsequently generated by interpolating between identified ground pixels. Experimental results are obtained for settlement areas that cover large parts of the cities of Izmir (Turkey) and Wuppertal (Germany). They confirm the capability of the proposed approaches for a reduction of omission errors compared to basic MF-based methods when classifying ground pixe- s, which is favorable in a mountainous terrain with steep slopes.
