[Termes IGN] XML schemaRésumé : (Auteur) Terrains form an important part of 3D city models. GIS practitioners often model terrains with 2D grids. However, TINs (Triangulated Irregular networks) are also increasingly used in practice. One such example is the 3D city model of the Netherlands (3DTOP10NL), which covers the whole country as one massive triangulation with more than one billion triangles. Due to the massive size of terrain datasets, the main issue is how to efficiently store and maintain them. The international 3D GIS standard CityGML allows us to store TINs using the Simple Feature representation. However, we argue that it is not appropriate for storing massive TINs and has limitations. We focus in this article on an improved storage representation for massive terrain models as TINs. We review different data structures for compactly representing TINs and explore how they can be implemented in CityGML as an ADE (Application Domain Extension) to efficiently store massive terrains. We model our extension using UML, and XML schemas for the extension are automatically derived from these UML models. Experiments with massive real‐world terrains show that, with this approach, we can compress CityGML files up to a factor of ~20 with one billion+ triangles, and our method has the added benefit of explicitly storing the topological relationships of a TIN model. [Termes IGN] réseau neuronal convolutifRésumé : (Auteur) Existing algorithms for Digital Terrain Model (DTM) extraction still face difficulties due to data outliers and geometric ambiguities in the scene such as contiguous off-ground areas or sloped environments. We postulate that in such challenging cases, the radiometric information contained in aerial imagery may be leveraged to distinguish between ground and off-ground objects. We propose a method for DTM extraction from imagery which first applies morphological filters to the Digital Surface Model to obtain candidate ground and off-ground training samples. These samples are used to train a Fully Convolutional Network (FCN) in the second step, which can then be used to identify ground samples for the entire dataset. The proposed method harnesses the power of state-of-the-art deep learning methods, while showing how they can be adapted to the application of DTM extraction by (i) automatically selecting and labelling dataset-specific samples which can be used to train the network, and (ii) adapting the network architecture to consider a larger surface area without unnecessarily increasing the computational burden. The method is successfully tested on four datasets, indicating that the automatic labelling strategy can achieve an accuracy which is comparable to the use of manually labelled training samples. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms two reference DTM extraction algorithms in challenging areas. [Termes IGN] températureRésumé : (Auteur) Climate maps have been widely used for the construction of species distribution models. These maps derive from interpolation of data collected by meteorological stations. The sparse distribution of stations generates maps with coarse spatial resolution that are unable to detect microclimates or areas that can serve as plant or animal refuges. This work proposes a method for downscaling temperature maps using the solar radiation falling upon hillsides as predictor for the influence of relief on local variability. Solar irradiance is estimated from a digital elevation model of the study area using a routine based on analytical hillshading. Some examples of downscaling from 1 km to 25 m spatial resolution are shown. The results are compared with the surface temperature maps from Landsat 8 satellite imagery. [Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) We present a powerful method to extract per-point semantic class labels from aerial photogrammetry data. Labeling this kind of data is important for tasks such as environmental modeling, object classification, and scene understanding. Unlike previous point cloud classification methods that rely exclusively on geometric features, we show that incorporating color information yields a significant increase in accuracy in detecting semantic classes. We test our classification method on four real-world photogrammetry datasets that were generated with Pix4Dmapper, and with varying point densities. We show that off-the-shelf machine learning techniques coupled with our new features allow us to train highly accurate classifiers that generalize well to unseen data, processing point clouds containing 10 million points in less than three minutes on a desktop computer. We also demonstrate that our approach can be used to generate accurate Digital Terrain Models, outperforming approaches based on more simple heuristics such as Maximally Stable Extremal Regions.
