[Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) A light detection and ranging (lidar) system is one of the most important technologies used for generating digital terrain models (DTMs). The point cloud data obtained by these systems consist of data gathered from ground and nonground features. To create a DTM with high resolution and accuracy, ground and nonground data must be separated. Numerous filtering algorithms have been developed for this purpose. The aim of this study was testing the filtering performance of six different filtering algorithms in four different test areas with different land cover were selected that had topographical features and characteristics. The algorithms were adaptive triangulated irregular network (ATIN), elevation threshold with an expand window (ETEW), maximum local slope (MLS), progressive morphology (PM), iterative polynomial fitting (IPF), and multiscale curvature classification (MCC) algorithms. In the results, all the filters performed well on a smooth surface and produced more errors in complex urban areas and rough terrain with dense vegetation. The IPF filtering algorithm generated the best results for the first three test areas (smooth landscape, urban areas and agricultural areas), while ETEW performed best in the fourth test area (steep areas with dense vegetation and infrastructure). [Termes IGN] valeur aberranteRésumé : (Auteur) Models of ground surface elevations are crucial to many applications of remotely sensed data, including estimates of the height relative to ground of non-ground objects, such as buildings and vegetation. In highly engineered regions, such as cities, there are many discontinuities in both the ground surface and the surface of non-ground objects. Sub-metre resolution elevation data for these regions are increasingly available. At these resolutions there is sufficient information and a growing need to improve model accuracies by incorporating discontinuities. Here we provide a new method for generating high resolution models of discontinuous ground surfaces from breakline data and digital surface models derived from remotely sensed data. The method uses segment based filtering, outlier removal and multiresolution thin-plate spline surface fitting. Breaklines are included in the fitted surface using partial derivatives and a breakline-aware method for transferring between different resolutions. We demonstrate our method using elevation data derived from photogrammetry for suburban regions of Perth, Western Australia, and Vaihingen, Germany. We produced ground surface models with noticeable qualitative and quantitative improvements when breaklines are included, at an increased computational cost of approximately 10% when all other parameters remained the same. For LiDAR derived elevations, we report our residual error against a number of other methods recorded using the ISPRS Ground Filtering Test Sites. [Termes IGN] réductionMots-clés libres : Optimum Dataset method Résumé : (Auteur) Modern data-acquisition technologies provide large datasets. Such datasets are often cumbersome for rational processing, and their processing is time consuming. Therefore, there are several methods that can enable the reduction of the dataset size. One of them is generalisation of the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) or the reduction method within the initial processing of measurement data. Another method can be the Optimum Dataset (OptD) method. This paper presents two approaches towards decreasing the Light Detection and Ranging dataset. The first approach is based on the process of DTM generalisation, the second one is based on the application of the OptD method. The reduced datasets were used for isoline map creation depicting the overflow land in open-pit mining. It was proved that the reduction needs to be planned deliberately and that the degree of reduction should be performed in a way that allows to maintain the characteristics of the terrain. [Termes IGN] rugosité du solRésumé : (auteur) The purpose of this study is to estimate the surface roughness (rms) using TerraSar-X data in HH polarization. Simulation of data is carried out at a wide range of moisture and roughness using the Integral Equation Model (IEM). The inversion method is based on Multi-Layer Perceptron neural network. Inversion technique is performed in two steps. In the first step, the neural network is trained using synthetic data. The inputs of the first neural network are the backscattering coefficient and incidence angle, and the moisture is the output. In the next step, three neural networks are built based on a prior and without prior information on roughness. The inputs of three neural network are backscattering coefficient, estimated moisture in the first step and incidence angle and the roughness is output. The validation of the proposed methods is carried out based on synthetic and real data. Ground roughness measurements are extracted from Digital Terrain Model (DTM) using the fractal method. The accuracy of moisture from synthetic data is 6.1 vol% without prior information on moisture and roughness. The roughness (rms) accuracy of synthetic datasets is 0. 61 cm without prior information and is 0.31 cm and 0.38 cm for rms lower than 2 cm and rms between 2 and 4 cm, with prior information on roughness. The result's analysis of the simulated data showed that the prior information on roughness strongly improves the accuracy of roughness and moisture estimates. The accuracy of rms estimates for the TerraSar-X image in the HH polarization is about 0.9 cm in the case of no prior information on roughness. The accuracy improves to 0.57 cm for rms lower than 2 cm and 0.54 cm for rms between 2 and 4 cm with prior information on roughness. An overestimation of rms for rms lower than 2 cm and an underestimation of rms for rms higher than 2 cm are observed. The results of the accuracy of the synthetic and real data showed that the X band in HH polarization has a very good potential to estimate the soil roughness.
