[Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (auteur) Customized mapping needs to rely on a strategy to help mapmakers in designing their maps. Our approach is based on analogy between existing sample maps and the wished customized map. The challenge consists in being able to offer the appropriate maps according to each mapmaker’s specifications. We have focused on the perception of seven selected visual properties of maps. To qualify this perception, a user test was set up. A sample map database was built in order to collect assessment of participants about visual properties. Test results were investigated through property and by statistical features. Analyses show that among properties, some are scored as more extreme and/or unanimous than others. Correlations between properties were also highlighted, which clarifies the characterization of sample maps. We then suggested a way to discover the database in a custom-made map process by using relevant queries based on statistical features of properties. Recommendations on exploiting a sample map database are finally formulated. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) In the context of the personalization of map design, cartographic needs have been highlighted considering the handling of more artistic and expressive tools, in order to design stylized and expressive maps, in existing cartographic pipelines. Based on previous works on style formalization, an approach of the specification of the style of a map has been proposed and experimented for some use cases. A first step concerns the analysis of inspiration sources, in order to extract "what does make the style of the source"™, i.e. the salient visual characteristics to be automatically reproduced (textures, spatial arrangements, linear stylization, etc.). In order to mimic and generate those visual characteristics, existing and innovative rendering techniques have been implemented in our GIS engine, thus extending the capabilities to generate expressive renderings. Therefore, an extension of the existing cartographic pipeline has been proposed based on the following aspects: 1- extension of the symbolization specifications OGC SLD/SE in order to provide a formalism to specify new types of Symbolizers and their related rendering methods; 2- separate specification of each rendering method and its parametrization, as metadata. The main contribution has been described in (Christophe et al. 2016). We focus here on the extension of the cartographic pipeline (SLD++ and metadata) and the diversity of map design capabilities that have been experimented for many topographic styles: old cartographic styles (Cassini), artistic styles (watercolor, impressionism, Japanese print), hybrid topographic styles (ortho-imagery & vector data) and finally abstract and photo-realist styles for the geovisualization of costal area. The genericity and interoperability of the approach is promising and has already been tested for 3D visualization. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (Auteur) [...] [Termes IGN] représentation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Geologically interested savants of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries described three-dimensional spatial relationships through the visual language of maps and sections of the Earth. At this time, there was a debate whether colour or line should feature in mapping our strata. Colour was an identifying characteristic of Wernerian mineralogy, but the exact manner in which colour should be employed in representing a mineralogical landscape remained controversial. According to the engineer and geologist William Smith (1769–1839), words or symbols, engraved on a map, marred a visual simplicity that accommodated an immediate understanding of the area represented. Colour enabled a quick and rational study of the countryside so that the savant instantly visualized the logic of the landscape. André-Jean-Marie Brochant de Villiers (1792–1857), professor of geology and mineralogy at École des Mines, argued differently. In a letter to Thomas Webster (1773–1844), he remarked on the difficulty of correlating colours in the key with those of strata when studying Greenough's Map of England and Wales (1819). By examining techniques of representation and the use of colour, this paper discusses the importance of aesthetics in the depiction of geological landscape. [Termes IGN] teinteRésumé : (Auteur) Colour impairments influences access to geographical information which is usually represented by colour maps. Three dimensions of colour: Hue, Saturation and Value (HSV), are intuitive and most critical visual variables in map design. In this paper, we specifically focus on colour deficiency of red-green colour impairments. A controlled experiment was designed and conducted to explore how three colour dimensions (HSV) affect the abilities of people with normal colour vision or with red-green colour impairments to distinguish colours in maps. An eye-tracking approach was applied to quantify the accuracy and response time by capturing user eye movements to analyse the effectiveness and efficiency. In this study, we used one section of the administrative map of Hebei Province to test participant responses to area features. Differences of effectiveness and efficiency across normal colour vision and red-green colour impairments were compared. Multiple comparisons among Hue, Saturation and Value were analysed. Results show that for both normal colour vision and red-green colour impairments, Hue is the most differentiable than Saturation and Value. Saturation and Value are at the same level to be differentiated and more difficult to be distinguished. Guidelines of designing maps for both normal colour vision and red-green colour impairments were derived. The results of this study can be helpful to improve the map designs for colour deficiency.
