Today a VRGIS based software solution has to facilitate the interactive visualization of high-resolution 3D terrain data over inter- and intranet. Due to advanced software technology and innovative data management concepts, large amounts of data may be processed in realtime. Digital elevation models, high resolution orthophotos, satellite images, 3d buildings and vector data provide the real time application with the information to display excellent high quality representations of complex terrains and landscapes.

[Termes IGN] XMLIndex. décimale : 33.30 Photogrammétrie numérique Résumé : (Auteur) The establishment and visualisation of large, reality-based 3D landscape and city models has received significant attention over the last few years - both in the scientific and the commercial community. Recent progress in 3D data capturing and web-based visualisation technologies are opening up new possibilities for a wide-spread use of 3D landscape models as a basis for new and exciting information and entertainment services. However, with the rapidly increasing size and complexity of the 3D models being acquired, a pressing need for suitable data management solutions has become apparent. This paper outlines why 3D GIS technologies are a key factor in establishing and maintaining large-scale, reality-based 3D geoinformation services. It also discusses specific features which should be provided by such 3D GIS in order to support the efficient visualisation and animation of reality-based landscape and city models. The aspects of managing reality-based 3D models within a 3D GIS environment are being investigated as part of the DILAS (Digital Landscape Server) project. DILAS is a fully DBMS supported framework and now a commercial product line - combining object-relational and XML technologies for the integrated management of very large 3D landscape and city models. The system provides a comprehensive support for colour, transparency, textures as well as animations and view control. This support for reality-based 3D models within a 3D GIS environment enables the automated generation of web-based 3D scenes with user-defined contents and appearance. The paper concludes with the presentation of pilot projects from application areas which will largely benefit from the functionality presented above. [Termes IGN] vue 3DRésumé : (Auteur) In the year 1988, a new topographical map 1:50,000 of the Mount Everest region was published by the National Geographic Society. The full map content was derived from aerial images of scale 1:35,000, acquired in a 1984 photogrammetric flight. This highly acclaimed topographical map, produced with Swiss photogrammetric and cartographic know-how, serves until nowadays as an important work of reference. We took the analogue data (images, contours), converted them into digital form through scanning, and produced a texture-mapped 3D computer model. With a DTM of 10 m grid-size and natural texture pixel-size of 1 m this model is currently the best dataset available for an area of 25 by 25 km around the summit of Mount Everest. This paper reports about the production procedure of the model and shows some high-resolution photorealistic visualization results. The dataset has been used in the meantime by cartographers and animation experts for the production of new map-related visualization products and is much sought after by scientists of various disciplines. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) In nearly all activities undertaken by the Hamburg city administration, CAD and GIS has become commonplace in two-dimensional applications. Indeed, the digital 2D city map of Hamburg or Digitale Stadtgrundkarte (DGSK) was well received by numerous public and private sector users and upwards of 60 000 maps are now generated annually by city's Department for GeoInformation and Survey to satisfy their needs - something of a record in Germany. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The paper presents an automatic approach for the generalisation of 3D building models with regard to the visualisation of urban landscapes. Simplified versions of such models are not only needed for level of detail structures in real-time rendering, but also for web-based 3D GIS and for the presentation on mobile computing devices. To yield more sophisticated building models compared to already known surface simplification algorithms from the field of computer vision, the presented solution is based on least squares adjustment theory combined with an elaborate set of surface classification and simplification operations. This concept allows for the integration of surface regularities into the building models which are important for visual impression. These regularities are stringently preserved over the course of the generalisation process.
