Note de contenu : Introduction

This paper discusses two current approaches to ground-based cloud sensing: the prototype instrument used at ETH/MeteoSwiss within Cloudmap and Cloudmap2 for stereoscopy tests, and a Daylight Visible/NIR Whole Sky Imager (WSI) system developed and fielded by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). The article includes descriptions of the radiometric and geometric calibration methods. Cloud amount, cloud-base height and cloud-base motion results from two ETH/MeteoSwiss measurement campaigns and from the operational WSI use at the German Weather Service (DWD) are shown. Finally, a case study with coincident satellite and ground data illustrates that ground-based digital imager systems are an interesting technique to validate satellite-based cloud-top heights and cloud-top motion winds of vertically thin clouds. [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (Auteur) Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are traditionally acquired from a stereo pair of aerial photographs sequentially captured by an airborne metric camera. Standard DEM extraction techniques can be naturally extended to satellite imagery, but the particular characteristics of satellite imaging can cause difficulties. The spacecraft ephemeris with respect to the ground site during image collects is the most important factor in the elevation extraction process. When the angle of separation between the stereo images is small, the extraction process typically produces measurements with low accuracy, while a large angle of separation can cause an excessive number of erroneous points in the DEM from occlusion of ground areas. The use of three or more images registered to the same ground area can potentially reduce these problems and improve the accuracy of the extracted DEM. The pointing capability of some sensors, such as the Multispectral Thermal Imager (MTI), allows for multiple collects of the same area from different perspectives. This functionality of MTI makes it a good candidate for the implementation of a DEM extraction algorithm using multiple images for improved accuracy. Evaluation of this capability and development of algorithms to geometrically model the MTI sensor and extract DEMs from multi-look MTI imagery are described in this paper. An RMS elevation error of 6.3-meters is achieved using 11 ground test points, while the MTI band has a 5-meter ground sample distance. [Termes IGN] séismeRésumé : (Auteur) A massive earthquake of Mw = 7.3 struck the western Himalaya on 8 October 2005 at 03:50:40 (UTC) causing widespread damage to property and lives. This earthquake is the result of thrusting of the Indian plate under the Eurasian plate. It is one of the deadliest earthquakes in South Asia in recent times. The recently launched Indian remote sensing satellite Cartosat–1, providing 2.5 m panchromatic along-track stereoscopic data have been analysed for damage assessment along with Resourcesat–1 multispectral data for understanding the regional tectonics. In this study, nearly 25% of the buildings are identified as fully collapsed in Uri and Punch region of the Jammu and Kashmir, India. Other damage such as bridge collapse, road blockage owing to landslides etc. is also identified from the satellite data. The coseismic landslides show clear spatial association with the pre-existing faults such as the Jhelum Fault and Main Boundary Thrust (MBT). A new trend in the alignment of landslides is found, which indicates reactivation of a new fault in this region. The effectiveness of the fine resolution stereoscopic satellite data for damage assessment in rugged mountainous terrain is also highlighted in this study. [Termes IGN] modèle stéréoscopiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This research study addressed and compared 3D physical and empirical models for stereo-processing and the generation of digital surface models (DSMs) from different stereo high-resolution (HR) sensors (Ikonos and QuickBird). The 3D physical model is Toutin's Model (TM) developed at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, and the empirical model is the rational function model (RFM). The study also evaluated the conditions of experimentation to appropriately use these 3D models. The first results on stereo-bundle adjustments demonstrated that TM and vendor-supplied RFMs gave similar results with Ikonos as soon as RFM was refined with a shift computed from one GCP. On the other hand, TM gave better results than vendor-supplied RFMs with QuickBird regardless of the polynomial order and the number of GCPs. Due to its relief dependency, QuickBird RFM needed to be refined at least with linear functions computed from at least 6 to 10 GCPs. Some large errors were, however, noted on forward image RFM in column. The DSMs were then generated using an intensity matching approach and compared to 0.2 m accurate lidar elevation data. Because DSMs included the height of land-cover (trees, houses), elevation linear errors with 90 percent confidence level (LE90) were computed and compared for the entire area and three land-cover classes (forests, urban/ residential, bare surfaces). TM and vendor-supplied RFMs with Ikonos, regardless of the method and GCP number, achieved comparable results for all classes, while TM achieved overall better results than vendor-supplied RFMs with QuickBird. All results demonstrated the necessity of refining Ikonos RFM with a shift and one GCP only and QuickBird RFM with lst-order linear functions and 6 to 10 GCPs due to its relief dependency.
