[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur)Geographic Information System (GIS) technology is rapidly evolving into a valuable tool for land surveying professionals. GIS surveying applications include land record databases, land use planning, and the compilation of historical mapping and aerial photography. A professional surveying project can include determining the location of a riparian or littoral boundary. This project shows how a professional land surveyor can utilize GIS software to solve a riparian boundary. The case study for this paper is the Lost River in Klamath County, Oregon. This research project includes historical survey data, maps, and aerial photography. The historical data are combined with current global navigation satellite system (GNSS) survey data and LiDAR imagery to solve the riparian boundary. Figure 1 shows the area of the case study. [Termes IGN] Virginie (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Accurate stream topography measurement is important for many ecological applications such as hydraulic modeling and habitat characterization. Habitat complexity measures are often made using visual approximations or total station (TS) surveying that can be subjective and have limited spatial resolution. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) can measure topography at a high resolution and accuracy. Two methods, TS surveying and TLS, were compared for measuring complex topography in a boulder-dominated 100 m forested reach of the Staunton River in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. The mean absolute difference between the two datasets was 0.11 m with 82.3 percent of the TS data within _0.1 m of TLS. The TLS dataset was processed to remove vegetation and create a 2 cm digital elevation model (DEM). An algorithm was developed for delineating rocks within the stream channel from the DEM. A common ecological metric based on the structural complexity of the stream, percent in-stream rock cover, was calculated from the TLS dataset, and the results were compared to estimates from traditional methods. This application illustrates the potential of TLS to quantify habitat complexity measures in an automated, unbiased manner. [Termes IGN] rivièreIndex. décimale : MX Mémoires divers Résumé : (auteur) In this thesis, a method is developed to estimate the moment of slack tide based on GPS measurements on a buoy. The moment of slack tide is the very moment the tidal current changes direction. The method is applied in the Schelde Estuary in the Netherlands. An estuary is the transition between two distinct water bodies: a river and a sea. Estuaries are very important as a transport link and a source of food. Interventions in the estuary bathymetry, like dredging, can have severe impact on the hydraulic behavior of the estuary. Knowledge of the physical phenomena that determine the tidal flow is important as they influence the environment of an estuary in many ways. One of the key parameters in tidal propagation is the phase lag, which is the difference in time between high or low water and the subsequent moment of slack. The main objective of this thesis is to estimate the moment of slack tide based on GPS measurements on a buoy ultimately with an accuracy in the order of 5-10 minutes. The buoy, which is used as an aid to navigation, is floating on the water and tied to the sea floor by a heavy anchor chain. In order to achieve this goal it is necessary to: investigate the performance of different GPS receivers in combination with different antennas and operating modes; analyze the motion of the buoy during several tidal cycles; develop a method to estimate the moment of slack tide based on GPS measurements on a buoy; and, investigate whether the results could be further improved by employing a Kalman filter that combines knowledge about the dynamics of the buoy and series of measurements over time as opposed to a single epoch slack tide estimation.
