[Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) According to the EU Habitats Directive, heathlands are “natural habitats of community interest”. Heathland management aims at conserving these habitats threatened by various changes, including successional processes leading to forest vegetation. We investigate the dynamics of woody species to the detriment of heathland over a period of 60 years in the Fontainebleau forest and we examine the effects of soil types, soil depth and topography parameters on heathland stability. We assess changes in forest cover between 1946 and 2003 by comparing vegetation maps derived from aerial photographs coupled to GIS analyses. The results show the loss of more than 75% of heathland during 1946–2003 due to tree colonisation of abandoned heathland. We detected differences in the dynamics of colonisation between coniferous and deciduous trees. The colonisation of heathland by coniferous species was faster over the last 20 years of our study period. Tree encroachment was faster in north-facing areas and in areas of acidic luvisols. While this dynamic was very slow in acid sandstone soils, heathland stability was more important in shallow soils on flat and south facing areas. Our study has the potential to assist land managers in selecting those heathland areas that will be easier to conserve and/or to restore by focusing on areas and spatial conditions that prevent forest colonisation and hence favour the long-term stability of heathland. [Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (auteur) Main objective of this study was to establish a relationship between land cover and land surface temperature (LST) in urban and rural areas. The research was conducted using Landsat, WorldView-2 (WV-2) and Digital Mapping Camera. Normalised difference vegetation index and normalised difference built-up index were used for establishing the relation between built-up area, vegetation cover and LST for spatial resolution of 30 m. Impervious surface and vegetation area generated from Digital Mapping Camera from Intergraph and WV-2 were used to establish the relation between built-up area, vegetation cover and LST for spatial resolutions of 0.1, 0.5 and 30 m. Linear regression models were used to determine the relationship between LST and indicators. Main contribution of this research is to establish the use of combining remote sensing sensors with different spectral and spatial resolution for two typical settlements in Vojvodina. Correlation coefficients between LST and LST indicators ranged from 0.602 to 0.768. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) The potential to use GPS signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data to estimate changes in vegetation surrounding a ground-based antenna is evaluated. A 1-D plane-stratified model that simulates the response of GPS SNR data to changes in both soil moisture and vegetation is presented. The model is validated against observations of SNR data from four field sites with varying vegetation cover. Validation shows that the average correlation between modeled and observed SNR data is higher than the average correlation between concurrent SNR observations from different satellite tracks at a site. The model also reproduces variations in the SNR metrics amplitude, phase, and effective reflector height over a range of vegetation wet weights from 0 to 4 kg · m-2, with r2 values of 0.79, 0.84, and 0.62, respectively. Model simulations indicate that the amplitude of SNR oscillations may be used to estimate vegetation amount when vegetation wet weight is below 1.5 kg · m-2. When vegetation wet weight exceeds 1.5 kg · m-2, the sensitivity of amplitude to changes in vegetation amount decreases. Phase of SNR oscillations also varies consistently with vegetation up to 1.5 kg · m-2. However, phase is also very sensitive to soil moisture variations, thus limiting its utility for estimating vegetation. Effective reflector height is not a consistent indicator of vegetation change. Beyond 1.5 kg · m-2, the constant frequency assumption used to characterize SNR fluctuations does not adequately describe observed data. A more complex approach than the standard SNR metrics used here is required to extend GPS-Interferometric Reflectometry sensing to thicker canopies.
