[Termes IGN] stéréoscopieRésumé : (Auteur) A digital terrain model (DTM) extracted from QuickBird in-track stereo images using a three-dimensional (3D) multisensor physical model developed at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, Natural Resources Canada was evaluated. Firstly. the stereo photogrammetric bundle adjustment was set-up with about 10 accurate ground control points and 1-2 m errors in the three axes were obtained over 48 independent checkpoints. The DTM was then generated using an area-based multi-scale image matching method and 3D semi-automatic editing tools and then compared to lidar elevation data with 0.2-m accuracy. An elevation error with 68% confidence level (LE68) of 6.4m was achieved over the full area. Since the DTM is in fact a digital surface model where the height, or a part, of land cover (trees, houses) is included, the accuracy depends on the land cover types. Using 3D visual classification of the stereo QuickBird images, different classes (deciduous, conifer, mixed and sparse forests, residential areas, bare soils and lakes) were generated to take into account the height of the surfaces (natural and human-made) in the accuracy evaluation. LE68 values of 3.4 m to 6.7 m were thus obtained depending on the land cover types with biases representative of the surface heights. On the other hand, LE68 values of 0.5m and 1.3 m with no bias were obtained for lakes and bare soils respectively. These last results are more representative of the real stereo QuickBird potential for DTM and 5-m contour line generation, compliant with the highest topographic standard. Since the images were acquired in wintertime and the lidar data in summertime, better results could thus be expected when using stereo images acquired in summertime, mainly in deciduous forests to integrate the full canopy height into the DSM. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) While accurate information on ecosystem C02 and water vapor exchange is available at eddy covariance flux tower sites, method, methods to expand predictions of C02 and energy exchange to regional or global scales with high fidelity are lacking. The main objective of this study was to examine the applicability of land surface and atmospheric products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) for assessing the spatial variation in C02 and water vapor fluxes for cloudless agricultural land pixels at the Island of Zealand, Denmark. The spatial distribution of green leaf area index, directbeam ark: diffuse solar radiation and air humidity was inferred on the basis of late morning MODIS data that was combined with afternoon AVHRR data to resolve the diurnal variation in air and surface temperature. These variables were used in a coupled "twoleaf' ecosystem model operating at an hourly time scale. The enhanced vegetation index (EVI) was strongly correlated with field measurements of green leaf area index (r2=0.91) and remained sensitive to variations in green biomass up to green leaf area indices of 45. Evaluation against standard meteorological data showed that instantaneous estimates of air temperature, actual vapor pressure and incoming solar radiation could be retrieved with overall root mean square errors of 2.5°C, 138.3 Pa and 47.7 Wm2, respectively. The combination of late morning and afternoon inferences made it possible to resolve the diurnal course in key model parameters, and predicted rates of ecosystem C02 and water vapor exchange were comparable to eddy covariance measurements at a single flux tower. A large spatial diversity in C02 and water vapor exchange was maintained throughout the study period due to significant regional variations in meteorological input variables and large spatial differences in canopy development. The results of this study stress the necessity of pixel based estimates for an accurate evaluation of regional budgets of C02 and water vapor exchange. [Termes IGN] Pinus (genre)Résumé : (Auteur) Responding to an increasing interest in studying vegetation changes over time, we review current methods of processing black and white digital aerial photographs in order to classify tree cover in pinyon-juniper woodlands. Besides applying commonly used clustering and supervised maxim likelihood methods, we have developed a new classifier, nearest edge thresholding, which is unsupervised and based on the principals of edge detection and density slicing. Comparison of the three methods' abilities to predict field values at plot scales of 100 m2 to 900 m2 shows this new method is better or comparable to others at all scales, can be easily applied to digital imagery, and has high correspondence with ground-truthed field values of tree cover.
