We take advantage of a unique dataset of millions of odometer readings from annual safety inspections of all private passenger vehicles in Metropolitan Boston to estimate the vehicle-miles-traveled (VMT) implication of alternative metropolitan growth scenarios: a sprawl-type “let-it-be” scenario and a smart-growth-type “winds-of-change” scenario. The data are georeferenced to 250 x 250 m grid cells developed by MassGIS. We apply a greedy algorithm to assign Traffic Analysis Zone (TAZ) level household growth projections to grid cells and then use spatial interpolation tools to estimate VMT-per-vehicle surfaces for the region. If new growth households have similar VMT behavior as their neighbors, then the let-it-be scenario will generate 12–15% more VMT per household compared to the winds-of-change scenario. However, even the “wind-of-change” scenario, will result in new households averaging higher VMT per household than the Metro Boston average observed in 2005. The implication is that urban growth management can significantly reduce GHG but, by itself, will not be sufficient to achieve the GHG emission reduction targets set by the State for the transportation sector. To bridge the gap, there is a need to seek evidence that solidifies any assumptions made about growth dynamics. For this purpose, we attempt to outline invariants in the historical evolution of two urban structures; Manhattan and Barcelona. By modelling changes on the street elements and the clusters they form, we mark invariants that expose self-organisational patterns similar to those in reaction-diffusion dynamics. While it is difficult to verify the role of these invariants in the organised behaviour of urban complexity, their very presence marks one of the defining characteristics for urban pattern recognition. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) Our study examines the relationships among various environmental variables in Surat city using remote sensing. Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite data were used in conjugation with geospatial techniques to study urbanization and correlation among satellite-derived biophysical parameters namely, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference built-up index (NDBI), normalized difference water index (NDWI), normalized difference bareness index (NDBaI) and land surface temperature (LST). A modified NDWI (MNDWI) was used for extracting areas under water. Land use/land cover classification was performed using hierarchical decision tree classification technique using ERDAS IMAGINE Expert classifier with an accuracy of 90.4% for 1990 and 85% for 2009. It was found that city has expanded over 42.75 sq.km within two decades. Built-up, fallow and sediment land use classes exhibited high dynamics with increase of nearly 200% and 50% and decrease of 55% respectively from 1990 to 2009. Vegetation and water classes were less dynamic with 20% decrease and 15% increase. The transformation of land parcels from vegetation to built-up, vegetation to fallow and fallow to built-up has resulted in increase of LST by 5.5 1 2.6°C, 6.7 1 3°C and 3.5 1 2.9°C, respectively. [Termes IGN] Spatial AnalystRésumé : (Auteur) Building density information plays an essential role in the design, planning, and management of modern cities. This paper presents an automated approach to urban analysis using airborne laser scanner data to derive geometric information (heights, areas, and volumes) and urban density attributes (building coverage ratio and floor area ratio) of buildings, land lots, and urban units. In particular, four urban units are analyzed in the city of Avila, Spain, which has experienced considerable growth in recent years. The urban map and building density results are used to validate the utility of the automated method with respect to cadastral data and applicable regulations (Urban Land Law, 2008, and Urban Regulation General Plan, 2005). The algorithms for these operations are implemented in the Spatial Analyst ArcGIS extension module.
