[Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (auteur) Transportation infrastructure, such as road or railroad networks, represent a fundamental component of our civilization. For sustainable planning and informed decision making, a thorough understanding of the long-term evolution of transportation infrastructure such as road networks is crucial. However, spatially explicit, multi-temporal road network data covering large spatial extents are scarce and rarely available prior to the 2000s. Herein, we propose a framework that employs increasingly available scanned and georeferenced historical map series to reconstruct past road networks, by integrating abundant, contemporary road network data and color information extracted from historical maps. Specifically, our method uses contemporary road segments as analytical units and extracts historical roads by inferring their existence in historical map series based on image processing and clustering techniques. We tested our method on over 300,000 road segments representing more than 50,000 km of the road network in the United States, extending across three study areas that cover 42 historical topographic map sheets dated between 1890 and 1950. We evaluated our approach by comparison to other historical datasets and against manually created reference data, achieving F-1 scores of up to 0.95, and showed that the extracted road network statistics are highly plausible over time, i.e., following general growth patterns. We demonstrated that contemporary geospatial data integrated with information extracted from historical map series open up new avenues for the quantitative analysis of long-term urbanization processes and landscape changes far beyond the era of operational remote sensing and digital cartography. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (auteur) This article proposes an estimation method for assessing urban sprawl using multispectral remote sensing data: SNPP-VIIRS, DMSP/OLS, Landsat 5-TM, and Landsat 8-OLI. This study focuses on the impacts of human activities, in terms of increased electrical-power consumption (EPC) due to urbanization. For this purpose, night-time light data are used to measure the EPC growth from 2000 to 2020. We also perform a suitability analysis using geographic information-systems techniques to propose a new urban town in Lahore to mitigate urbanization and EPC increase. We found an overall increase of 33% in urban area and an EPC increase of 21.6% in the last two decades. We also find that the best proposed site for the new urban town is in the northwest of Lahore. [Termes IGN] Wuhan (Chine)Résumé : (auteur) As a powerful predictive technique based on machine learning, the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model has been widely used in geographic modeling. However, its performance in calibrating cellular automata (CA) for urban growth simulation has not been investigated. This study compares the MaxEnt model with logistic regression (LR), artificial neural network (ANN), and support vector machine (SVM) models to explore its advantages in simulating urban growth and interpreting driving mechanisms. With the land use data of 2000 and 2020 from GlobeLand30, the constructed LR-CA, ANN-CA, SVM-CA, and MaxEnt-CA models are applied to simulate the urban growth of Beijing, Tianjin, and Wuhan, respectively. Their performance has been evaluated from multiple aspects such as the accuracy of training, testing, and projecting, computational efficiency, simulation accuracy, and simulated urban landscape. The results indicate that the MaxEnt model is superior to the other models except for the computational efficiency, but the time required for the MaxEnt training and projecting is acceptable and far less than that of the SVM. Taking the LR-CA as the benchmark, the kappa coefficients (Kappa) of the MaxEnt-CA have been increased by 4.20%, 3.38%, and 5.87% in Beijing, Tianjin, and Wuhan, respectively; the increments of corresponding figure of merits (FoM) are 6.26%, 4.58%, and 8.49%. The driving mechanisms of urban growth such as the interactions, response curves, and importance of spatial variables, have also been revealed by the MaxEnt modeling. The driving mechanisms of urban growth in Tianjin are more complex than that in Beijing and Wuhan, because there are more variable interactions; the relationships between spatial factors and urban growth in the three study areas are all nonlinear; the topographic factors and city center of Beijing, the traffic factors and water bodies of Tianjin, and the traffic factors, city center and water bodies of Wuhan are significant factors affecting their urban growth. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (auteur) Most contemporary urban cellular automata (CA) models primarily focus on the simulation of urban land expansion, and cannot effectively simulate vertical urban growth. This study addresses this drawback by extending a patch-based urban CA model with a component that can predict the building volumes of an urban land expansion scenario. The proposed model is evaluated through a case study in the Guangzhou-Foshan metropolitan area, China. The horizontal urban growth simulations achieve a mean ‘Figure-of-merit’ value of 0.1406 at the cell level and an agreement of 97% at the pattern level. The building volume prediction made by the methods of random forest and k-nearest-neighbor has a testing R2 of 0.90 and a mean percentage absolute error of 22%. The proposed model is applied to the urban growth projections under the shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs). The results successfully reflect the influences that different SSPs have on vertical urban developments. These results also complement related research of urbanization projections under the SSPs, because most existing studies consider the impacts of horizontal urban growth only. As building volumes and heights are fundamental parameters to urban climate modeling, the ability of the proposed model to project future change in vertical urban developments can support the mitigation of climate change effects on human settlements. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Studies on urban–rural fringes, which represent regions facing various urbanization problems caused by rapid expansion, have steadily increased in recent years. However, problems persist in the quantitative delimitation of such regions. Based on the characteristics of abrupt urbanization-level changes in urban–rural fringe areas, we propose a constraint-based method in this study to detect the urban–rural fringes of cities with a spatial polycentric structure of ‘Main center–Subcenter’ based on data from multiple sources. We used the proposed approach to delimitate the fringe areas of Jiangyin and Zhangjiagang and identify their urban main center and subcenter pre-defined by their city master plans, towns, and rural hinterlands. Comparison of the identified results of different single urbanization indices, a single detection center, kernel density estimation, and a single constraint revealed that the patch density and Shannon’s diversity index of the proposed method were higher in urban–rural fringes and smaller in city centers and rural hinterlands. This suggests that the landscape of urban–rural fringes delimitated by the proposed method is more fragmented, diverse, and complicated, thereby performing better. This study is significant for future urban spatial analysis, planning, and management.
