[Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) This study developed an impervious surface fraction algorithm (ISFA) for automatic mapping of urban areas from Landsat data. We processed the data for 2001 and 2014 to trace the urbanization of Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras, using a four-step procedure: (1) data pre-processing to perform image reflectance normalization, (2) quantification of impervious surface area (ISA) using ISFA, (3) accuracy assessment of mapping results and (4) change analysis of urban growth. The mapping results compared with the ground reference data confirmed the validity of ISFA for automatic delineation of ISA in the study region. The overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient achieved for 2001 were 92.8% and 0.86, while the values for 2014 were 91.8% and 0.84, respectively. The results of change detection between the classification maps indicated that ISA increased approximately 1956.7 ha from 2001 to 2014, mainly attributing to the increase of the city’s population. [Termes IGN] Union Européenne
[Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (auteur) The Member States of the European Union have committed to the maintenance and protection of forest lands. More precisely, the Member States aim to ensure the sustainable development and management of the EU's forests. For 2013, Eurostat's statistics about primary and secondary wood products in the European forest land (65% thereof privately owned) estimate a roundwood production of 435 million m3 in total. Harmonised information, i.e., spatially and temporarily differentiated, on forestry and wood harvesting activities in the European forests are missing however. This lack of information impedes the scientific assessment of the impacts that forest management practices have on the soil-related forest ecosystems (e.g., accelerated water soil erosion, delivery of inert sediments and pollutants within the drainage network, pauperization of aquatic ecosystems). It also prevents national and European institutions from taking measures aimed at an effective mitigation of the rapidly advancing land degradation. This study provides a first pan-European analysis that delineates the spatial patterns of forest cover changes in 36 countries. The first dynamic assessment of the soil loss potential in the EU-28 forests is reported. The recently published High-resolution Global Forest Cover Loss map (2000–2012) was reprocessed and validated. Results show that the map is a powerful tool to spatiotemporally indicate the forest sectors that are exposed to cover change risks. The accuracy assessment performed by using a confusion matrix based on 2300 reference forest disturbances distributed across Europe shows values of 55.1% (producer accuracy) for the algorithm-derived forest cover change areas with a Kappa Index of Agreement (KIA) of 0.672. New insights into the distribution of the forest disturbance in Europe and the resulting soil loss potential were obtained. The presented maps provide spatially explicit indicators to assess the human-induced impacts of land cover changes and soil losses on the European soil-related forest ecosystems. These insights are relevant (i) to support policy making and land management decisions to ensure a sustainable forest management strategy and (ii) to provide a solid basis for further spatiotemporal investigations of the forestry practices’ impacts on the European forest ecosystems. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (auteur) Monitoring ground deformations arising from groundwater dynamics in dense urban coastal terrains is crucial for the sustainable development of infrastructures in these highly populated areas. The city of Montreal, which is located in the Saint-Laurent plain in eastern Canada, with its fast-growing populations, is a unique case study for other similar cities in coastal terrains. The city undergoes high-level house foundation damages with densities reaching up to 89 repairs/km2 resulting from time-dependent ground deformations that are correlated to groundwater dynamics and evapotranspiration. Using Radarsat-2 C-Band synthetic aperture radar interferometry, we observe 3- to 5-mm ground line-of-sight displacement variations temporally outphased by few months relative to the 2-m subartesian aquifer hydraulic head variations. The deformations are observed over a 60-km2 area located in the central part of the Montreal Island in Canada, from 2008 to 2010. We observe displacements of ~1 mm/year uplift in the areas covered by 15-m-thick clay layer. These displacements are well correlated to the number of house repairs. We also observe ~2 mm/year subsidence on elevated terrains, associated with evapotranspiration. The amplitudes of the displacements observed during this two-year study are significant when integrated over the average lifetime of urban structures. We conclude that the observed ground deformations are related to the seasonal variation of hydraulic head in most of the areas of Montreal. Moreover, wetter climate forecasts over upcoming decades for this area, will accentuate groundwater level fluctuations; thus, more ground deformations are foreseen, and have to be considered in future infrastructure design standards.
