[Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) The potential of high resolution IKONOS and QuickBird satellite imagery for mapping and analysis of land and water resources at local scales in Minnesota is assessed in a series of three applications. The applications and accuracies evaluated include: (1) classification of lake water clarity (r 2 = 0.89), (2) mapping of urban impervious surface area (r2 = 0.98), and (3) aquatic vegetation surveys of emergent and submergent plant groups (80% accuracy). There were several notable findings from these applications. For example, modeling and estimation approaches developed for Landsat TM data for continuous variables such as lake water clarity and impervious surface area can be applied to high resolution satellite data. The rapid delivery of spatial data can be coupled with current GPS and field computer technologies to bring the imagery into the field for cover type validation. We also found several limitations in working with this data type. For example, shadows can influence feature classification and their effects need to be evaluated. Nevertheless, high resolution satellite data has excellent potential to extend satellite remote sensing beyond what has been possible with aerial photography and Landsat data, and should be of interest to resource managers as a way to create timely and reliable assessments of land and water resources at a local scale. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) The long-time historical evolution and recent rapid development of' BeiJing, China, present before us a unique urban structure. A 10-metre spatial resolution SPOT panchromatic image of Beijing has been studied to capture the spatial patterns of the city. Supervised image classifications were performed Using statistical and structural texture features produced from the image. Textural features, including eight texture features from the Grey-Level Cooccurrence Matrix (GI-CM) method ; a computationally efficient texture feature, the Number of Different Grey-levels (NDG), and a structural texture feature, Edge Density (ED), were evaluated. It was found that generally single texture features performed poorly. Classification accuracy increased with increasing number of texture features until three or four texture features were combined. The more texture features in the combination, the smaller difference between different combinations. The results also show that a lower number of texture features were needed for more homogeneous areas. NDG and ED combined with GLCM texture features produced similar results as the same number of GLCM texture features. Two classification schemes were adopted, stratified classification and non-stratified classification. The best stratified classification result was better than the best non-stratified classification result. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, has stepped into a rapid urbanisation stage since 1980s, especially in the last decade. The population growth in a narrow corner between the Atlantic Ocean and Sahara Desert, exposed to several risks of natural disasters, has produced an overburden to the infertile land and at the same time led to a degradation of the urban environment and difficulty of life. This research is focused on an urban expansion analysis and flood risk assessment by remote sensing techniques utilising multitemporal SPOT/HRV images and demographic data. Our aims are to understand the factors influencing expansion, evaluate the means of controlling environmental impacts and produce useful references for the future urban planning. The results show that Nouakchott had extended by 36 km2 at an annual growth rate of 5.3% and an average extension rate of 3.6 km2/yr corresponding to a population growth about 380,000 people from 1989 to 1999. Regression analysis suggests that the latter is the main dynamics driving the urban expansion (R' = 0.9873). Furthermore, the littoral depression, a belt in peril of seawater inundation between the coastal sandbar and urban districts, where future urban construction is recommended to avoid, was analysed and three risk degrees graded by spatial modelling. And finally, three inneglected points proposed for consideration in the future urban planning were discussed in this paper. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) This study advocates the use of GIS and remote sensing technologies to establish urban evolution maps and assess the impact of urbanization on agricultural areas over the last three decades. The target area is the city of BeniMellal, located in central Morocco. The methodology adopted makes use of panchromatic SPOT images to survey the urban areas during the 1980s and 1990s. Available topographic maps provided the information for the 1970s. Maps and statistics of land use and urban growth for Beni Mellal were established after manually classifying images on a perpolygon basis and digitizing topographic maps using GIS capabilities. The results show an increase in dense urban area by 980.7 ha from the 1970s to the 1990s. This increase occurred at the expense of forests (24.7 ha), plantations (752.3 ha), rangeland (113.4 ha), nonirrigated land (69.7 ha), and irrigated land (20.6 ha). During this period, scattered urban areas, predominantly suburbs, increased by 755.9 ha to the detriment of forests (14.9 ha), plantations (109.8 ha), rangeland (138.9 ha), nonirrigated land (400.5 ha), and irrigated land (91.9 ha). These cartographic and statistic results are efficient decisionmaking tools for protecting agricultural land and planning urban and suburban areas.
