[Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) Understanding urban dynamics is an increasingly important challenge that can be answered in several ways. For many years, an important body of research has been tackling this problem in the literature of regional science, urban and economic geography, geomatics and related fields. But, whatever the field of research, in order to better understand urban dynamics, one needs to study the actual changes geographic objects undergo over time. Studying such changes requires the constitution of spatiotemporal databases containing data for each step of the considered evolutions. Unfortunately, building such spatio-temporal databases from existing topographic databases is a difficult process that requires tracking topographic objects in consecutive databases and creating links between them. The evolution of topographic objects which evolution has been tracked can be studied and then simulated. The observed changes the geographic objects undergo help up understand each topographic object's dynamics, their particularities on specific geographical areas as well as their evolutions in different time periods. Simulations can then be used to better understand the specific evolutions taking place on a given territory. Eventually, such simulations might be able to help the planning and policy making processes. The methodology presented in this paper includes the construction of spatio-temporal databases, the capture of historical topographic data from existing topographic maps, and a rich hierarchy creation process. Finally, the bases of our vector-based simulation platform are given. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a fuzzy inference guided cellular automata approach. Semantic or linguistic knowledge on urban development is expressed as fuzzy rules, based on which fuzzy inference is applied to determine the urban development potential for each pixel. A defuzzification process converts the development potential to the required neighbourhood development level, which is taken by cellular automata as initial approximation for its transition rules. Such approximations are updated through spatial calibration over townships and temporal calibration with multi-temporal satellite images. Assessment of the modelling results is based on three evaluation measures: fitness and Type I and Type II errors. The approach is applied to model the growth of the city of Indianapolis, Indiana over a period of 30 years from 1973 to 2003. A fitness level of 100 + 20% with 30% average errors can be achieved for 80% of the townships in urban-growth prediction. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) We applied the Interferometric Point Target Analysis (IPTA) technique to study the city of Rome (Italy) aiming to detect and measure the surface movements of buildings and urban structures. The available SAR dataset has been delivered by ESA CAT1 3258 and ranges the period 1992-2005. In particular ERS1-ERS2 data processed covers 1995-2000, while Envisat ASAR 2002-2005. The Point Target velocity map shows a general stability except for some very local areas affected by subsidence rate larger than 10 mm/year. The analysis of the time series, compared to a detailed geological and geotechnical investigation of the lithostratigraphy of the alluvial sediments of the Tiber River, and combined with a temporal reconstruction of the expansion of the city over the alluvial valleys, allowed us to depict the main factors controlling the observed subsidence. These are: the in situ effective stress conditions, the related compressibility and viscous characteristics of the loaded soils, the thickness of the compressible stratum, the time since loading instant, and the entity of loading. Furthermore the observed subsidence is time-dependent, even at a long time-scale, with respect to the age of the buildings being most of the buildings constructed since the '50s still affected by slow subsidence. We mainly focused on the Grottaperfetta stream valley that is characterized by an anomalous high and time-lasting subsidence. Original data on the lithostratigraphic setting of this alluvial valley indicate that the high subsidence rate measured up to 2005 is caused by a still active primary consolidation process.
