[Termes IGN] séquence d'imagesRésumé : (auteur) In 2019, four strong earthquakes of Mw>6.4 occurred successively in Mindanao, Philippines. Based on the reports from the USGS and PHIVOLCS, these earthquakes were dominated by strike-slip ruptures. Whether these earthquakes are temporally and spatially related remained unknown. We characterized the coseismic displacement fields during the earthquake sequence using an InSAR technique with Sentinel-1 SAR data. The InSAR deformation measurements convincingly reveal that the four earthquakes produced distinct coseismic displacement patterns. We estimated the source parameters of the earthquakes with a two-step inversion strategy. The optimal model suggests that the earthquake sequence resulted from the reactivation of a conjugate fault structure that involves two nearly vertical left-lateral strike-slip faults and two high-angle right-lateral strike-slip faults. We calculated Coulomb stress changes from the earthquake sequence, suggesting that the previous strong earthquakes had significant stress-encouraging effects on the following events. The regional velocities based on the GPS analysis suggest that the formation of this conjugate structure is mainly due to the westward movement of the subducting Philippine Sea Plate. This earthquake sequence provides a seismotectonic background for subsequent strong earthquakes and helps to better understand the formation mechanisms and seismotectonic implications of conjugate structure rupturing. [Termes IGN] TaïwanRésumé : (auteur) Applications of low-cost single-frequency continuous GPS receivers for monitoring volcano and landslide activities as well as to complement dual-frequency receivers have been demonstrated to produce stable and accurate positioning. In studies of crustal deformation, the relative distance between monitoring stations may vary from several kilometers to tens of kilometers, hence the differential single-frequency observations cannot model the ionospheric delay or other distance dependent errors. The 55 low-cost single-frequency continuous stations have been deployed together with 52 continuous dual-frequency stations in southeastern Taiwan since 2008. All of the single-frequency stations have applied corrections using dual-frequency stations to eliminate the distance dependent errors. Comparing velocity estimates from 8 co-located, the differences in horizontal and vertical components are less than 3 mm/yr and 6 mm/yr, respectively. Our study shows that the combination of single- and dual-frequency GPS data can provide robust results to study the fault slip behavior on the Longitudinal Valley fault. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) This paper describes the methods used to estimate positions, velocities, breaks, and seasonalterms from daily Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements. Break detection and outlierremoval have been automated so that decades of daily measurements from thousands of stations can beprocessed in a few hours. New measurements are added, and parameters are updated every week. Modelparameters allow separation of interseismic, annual, coseismic, and postseismic signals. Tools availablethrough GeoGateway (http://geo-gateway.org) allow rapid visualization and analysis of these terms forresults that can be subsetted in time or space. Results show highly variable and nonlinear motion for GPSstations in southern California. The variable motion is related to seasonal motions, distributed tectonicmotion, earthquakes, and postseismic motions that can continue for years. In some areas results suggest thatadditional processes are responsible for the observed motions. In general, following earthquakes, stationsreturn to their longterm motions after 2–3 years, though some exceptions occur. The use of the tools showsnonlinear motion in the Salton Trough of southern California related to the 2010 M7.2 El MayorCucapahearthquake, 2012 Brawley earthquake swarm, and a creep event on the Superstition Hills fault in 2017. [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (auteur) Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technology can be used to observe high spatial resolution one-dimensional (1-D) deformation along the line-of-sight direction from a single-track synthetic aperture radar (SAR) dataset. With the aid of multi-track InSAR data or a prior model, InSAR can be extended to infer 3-D deformation information, but the temporal resolution is generally limited. This paper presents an InSAR-based method to retrieve high spatio-temporal resolution 3-D displacements over mining areas (hereafter referred to as the MTI-based method). The core idea of the proposed method is to enhance the temporal resolution of the time-series 3-D displacement estimates by fusing multi-track InSAR observations and a prior model. Firstly, we retrieve high spatial resolution 3-D mining displacements from single-track InSAR 1-D deformation observations, with the assistance of the prior deformation model. By applying this approach to multi-track InSAR data over the same area, we obtain much denser 3-D mining displacement samples in time than those derived from a single-track InSAR dataset. Secondly, we propose a generalized weighted least-squares method to integrate the denser 3-D displacement samples, to solve the high temporal resolution 3-D mining displacements, in which the rank deficiency needs to be tackled. Finally, time-series 3-D mining displacements at the chronological dates of all the available multi-track SAR images are estimated. The Yungang coal mining area of China was selected to test the proposed method using two adjacent-track ALOS PALSAR-1 datasets. Compared with the single-track InSAR-derived results, the proposed method not only significantly improves the temporal resolution of the monitoring results by 42.6%, obtaining more detailed 3-D displacements, but it also provides important data support for understanding and modeling the distinctive kinematics of mining deformation and assessing mining-related geohazards. What is more, the core idea of the proposed method will be beneficial to high spatio-temporal resolution 3-D deformation estimation in other geophysical processes. [Termes IGN] viscositéRésumé : (auteur) The Wharton basin is situated in the north-eastern part of the Indian Ocean. In 2012 it hosted the largest intraplate strike-slip earthquakes ever recorded by geophysical networks. The Mw 8.6 earthquake of April 11, 2012, was preceded by a major foreshock (Mw 7.2) on January 10 and was followed two hours afterward by a Mw 8.2 event. These three large events occurred at the diffuse boundary between the Indian and Australian plates and were almost pure strike-slips on sub-vertical rupture surfaces. Using GRACE data, we first extracted the coseismic and postseismic gravity signals caused by these earthquakes. Then we fitted both GPS and the highest available spatial resolution of GRACE data using the geometry of the fault system suggested by Hill et al. (2015). We propose a regularization, which allows to solve for a linear problem in order to invert GPS and GRACE data under constraints on the rake angle. Our inversion yields a uniform displacement field on all elements of a given fault plane. Our solution shows that even the main displacement occurred on WNW trending faults, comparable displacement also occurred on a rupture striking NNE. Hence, we show that the deformation in this diffuse plate boundary region in 2012 was accommodated by displacements along both fault-systems. A viscoelastic relaxation of the asthenosphere with a Maxwell viscosity 1019 Pa∙s successfully explains the postseismic displacements at GPS sites and postseismic gravity signals. The limited postseismic aftershock activity suggests small postseismic slip in the area of the 2012 Wharton earthquakes contrary to what is often observed after large subduction event. Because a part of the observed signal could be related to afterslip, our obtained Maxwell viscosity value should be considered as a lower limit of the asthenospheric viscosity below the Wharton basin.
