Archaeologists, anthropologists, geographers, remote sensing, and archaeometry experts share their methodologies relying on a wealth of techniques and data including, but not limited to: very high resolution satellite images from optical and radar space-borne sensors, air-borne surveys, geographic information systems (GIS), archaeological fieldwork, and historical maps.A couple of the contributions highlight the value of noninvasive and nondestructive laboratory analyses (e.g., neutron diffraction) to reconstruct ancient manufacturing technologies, and of geological ground investigations to corroborate hypotheses of historical events that shaped cultural landscapes.Case studies encompass famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites (e.g., the Nasca Lines in Peru), remote and yet-to-discover archaeological areas in tropical forests in central America, European countries, south Asian changing landscapes, and environments which are arid nowadays but were probably full of woody vegetation in the past.Finally, the reader can learn about the state-of-the-art of education initiatives to train site managers in the use of space technologies in support of their activities, and can understand the legal aspects involved in the application of EO and RS to address current challenges of African heritage preservation. [Termes IGN] webGLRésumé : (auteur) For a long time people have been interested in the past and history and how we can go back in time using a time machine. And while we cannot invent a time machine, at least not yet, we can create a virtual one. Our ”virtual” time machine is an interactive web application that allows users to browse through and navigate within historical images (aerial/terrestrial photographs or postcards) that are projected on a 3D photogrammetric model (point cloud or 3D mesh), thus going back in time and interacting with historical 3D models and images. This was achieved by adopting a semiautomatic approach where the user identifies first 6 to 8 hints on the historical image and the photogrammetric model, then this information is used as an entry data to a photogrammetric software that computes the pose and orientation of the image. The purpose of this work, which is part of the ALEGORIA project, is to preserve cultural heritage, to give the users the opportunity to go back in time and study history of a place or simply discover howtheir hometown looked some years ago. [Termes IGN] RomeRésumé : (Auteur) On the Aventine Minor, the oratory of Santa Silvia was home to a community of oriental monks, who, in the first half of the seventeenth century, created a typical Palestinian cemetery with a small monastery that expanded with the growing prestige of the community. The construction of the Basilica of San Saba, above the oratory, was by a group of monks, “the Benedettini di Montecassino,” who lived there in the middle of the tenth century. The substructure was only recovered in the early 1900s. The study of this architectural structure is particularly interesting because there were no complete surveys and the available documentation, as far as we know, was limited to a graphical plan and section. For this reason and due to the archeological significance, it has been selected as a national research project (PRIN 2010–2011). The research has requested detailed documentation through laser scanning and photographic-based documentation. The goal of the present work is to produce a documentation of the oratory from CAD model to the BIM construction. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) For years, the Laboratory of Geomatics of the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria has undertaken an interdisciplinary project for the recovery and dissemination of information regarding the cultural-artistic and archeological heritage of the metropolitan area. The combined use of geomatics technologies (laser scanners, GPS positioning, digital photogrammetry, remote sensing, GPR) allows on the one hand to investigate objects and artifacts, providing metric, form, and location information; and on the other, to catalog information and make it accessible to the community. Indeed, the digitalization and reconstruction tools of 3D models can be the answer to the limits related to communicability in the archeological sector. Precision, detail, and very accurate photo-realistic reconstructions are particularly useful for virtual and augmented reality applications, integrating them in the devices used on a daily basis. The present note concerns, therefore, the acquisition of information using the point cloud from UAVs and laser scanners, the subsequent 3D modeling, and their representation in an augmented reality (AR) environment using mobile platforms. The application was tested on the church of Sant’Antonio Abate, located in the North of Reggio Calabria, which according to studies is the only evidence of medieval architecture in the territory of Reggio Calabria.
