[Termes IGN] tenseurIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (Auteur) Les chaînes alpines et les bassins de Méditerranée occidentale constituent la frontière de plaque complexe accommodant la convergence entre les plaques Afrique et Eurasie en Europe. La cinématique de cette région et la déformation accommodée par chaque structure restent à quantifier. L'objet de ce travail est la détermination et l'analyse d'un champ de vitesses géodésiques, homogène et précis au niveau de 1 mm/an, couvrant l'Europe et la Méditerranée occidentale. Pour atteindre ce résultat, des méthodes de combinaison de jeux de coordonnées positions/vitesses ont été adaptées. Elles permettent l'expression des résultats de différents réseaux géodésiques dans un champ de vitesses unique et cohérent. Un premier champ de vitesses a été déterminé à partir de la combinaison des résultats des réseaux GPS permanents européen (EUREF), français (RGP), REGAL (Alpes occidentales) avec une sélection de sites du repère de référence terrestre ITRF2000. Dans une deuxième étape, ces résultats ont été densifiés par des mesures de campagnes dans les Alpes occidentales, le Jura et le fossé rhénan. Une analyse statistique du champ de vitesse indique que les sites d'Europe centrale (Nord des Alpes et des Carpathes, Est du graben du Rhin) présentent un niveau de rigidité meilleur que 0.4 mm/an. Ces sites permettent de définir un référentiel dans lequel les vitesses résiduelles en Europe et Méditerranée peuvent être représentées avec un biais minimum. Dans ce référentiel, l'Espagne, la Méditerranée occidentale et le bloc Corso-Sarde ont des vitesses résiduelles négligeables. Ce résultat indique que le raccourcissement lié à la convergence Afrique/Europe est principalement absorbé dans les chaînes du Maghreb. Les données géodésiques confirment la rotation anti-horaire du bloc adriatique par rapport à l'Europe stable autour d'un pôle situé dans la plaine du Pô. Cette rotation implique une extension de 2-5 mm/an le long des Apennins, un raccourcissement de -2 mm/an dans les Alpes centrales et de 4-5 mm/an dans les Dinarides. Dans les Alpes occidentales, les mouvements ne dépassent pas 1.5 mm/an. Les vitesses indiquent un régime de déformation combinant décrochement dextre et extension localisée dans le coeur de la chaîne. Dans la partie sud des Alpes occidentales et en Provence, le régime est dominé par le raccourcissement NS à NW-SE. Le régime de déformation des Alpes semble donc être contrôlé par des conditions cinématiques aux limites imposées par la rotation du bloc Adriatique. Par ailleurs, des simulations numériques suggèrent que, dans un contexte de très faible convergence ou de légère extension, la contribution des forces de volume liées à la topographie de la chaîne alpine occidentale est suffisante pour générer de l'extension dans le coeur de l'arc alpin occidental. Enfin, les points situés au Sud de la Méditerranée occidentale et susceptibles d'appartenir à la plaque Afrique indiquent une vitesse de convergence Afrique/Eurasie en Europe de 30 à 50 % plus faible que celle prédite par le modèle NUVELlA. Ce résultat est confirmé par l'étude d'une solution GPS globale, incluant des sites géodésiques sur l'ensemble de la plaque Afrique. On trouvera en annexe le mandat du groupe de travail. Les membres du GTP font partie de quatre catégories : - des utilisateurs du RGP, - des constructeurs GPS, - des responsables de stations permanentes et - l'IGN en temps que fédérateur du RGP.
