[Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) High-resolution spatio-temporal datasets are being collected every day to record the behaviour of several natural phenomena. However, data-mining techniques are needed to extract relevant patterns from very large repositories and reveal spatial and temporal patterns in the behaviour of these phenomena. To this aim, we propose a system for mining data with spatial and temporal characteristics, and for visualizing and interpreting the results. Within this system, we have developed two complementary 3D visualization environments, one based on Google Earth and one relying on a Java3D graphical user interface. In this paper, we illustrate the main features of the system we have developed, and report on the main results we have obtained by analysing the Hurricane Isabel dataset. [Termes IGN] surveillance sanitaireRésumé : (Auteur) Population mobility, i.e. the movement and contact of individuals across geographic space, is one of the essential factors that determine the course of a pandemic disease spread. This research views both individual-based daily activities and a pandemic spread as spatial interaction problems, where locations interact with each other via the visitors that they share or the virus that is transmitted from one place to another. The research proposes a general visual analytic approach to synthesize very large spatial interaction data and discover interesting (and unknown) patterns. The proposed approach involves a suite of visual and computational techniques, including (1) a new graph partitioning method to segment a very large interaction graph into a moderate number of spatially contiguous subgraphs (regions); (2) a reorderable matrix, with regions 'optimally' ordered on the diagonal, to effectively present a holistic view of major spatial interaction patterns; and (3) a modified flow map, interactively linked to the reorderable matrix, to enable pattern interpretation in a geographical context. The implemented system is able to visualize both people's daily movements and a disease spread over space in a similar way. The discovered spatial interaction patterns provide valuable insight for designing effective pandemic mitigation strategies and supporting decision-making in time-critical situations. We consider the computational efficiency of detecting four such spatio-temporal patterns, namely flock, leadership, convergence, and encounter, as defined by Laube et al., Finding REMO—detecting relative motion patterns in geospatial lifelines, 201–214, (2004). These patterns are large enough subgroups of the moving point objects that exhibit similar movement in the sense of direction, heading for the same location, and/or proximity. By the use of techniques from computational geometry, including approximation algorithms, we improve the running time bounds of existing algorithms to detect these patterns. [Termes IGN] requête spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Searching for relevant knowledge across heterogeneous geospatial databases requires an extensive knowledge of the semantic meaning of images, a keen eye for visual patterns, and efficient strategies for collecting and analyzing data with minimal human intervention. In this paper, we present our recently developed content-based multimodal Geospatial Information Retrieval and Indexing System (GeoIRIS) which includes automatic feature extraction, visual content mining from large-scale image databases, and high-dimensional database indexing for fast retrieval. Using these underpinnings, we have developed techniques for complex queries that merge information from heterogeneous geospatial databases, retrievals of objects based on shape and visual characteristics, analysis of multiobject relationships for the retrieval of objects in specific spatial configurations, and semantic models to link low-level image features with high-level visual descriptors. GeoIRIS brings this diverse set of technologies together into a coherent system with an aim of allowing image analysts to more rapidly identify relevant imagery. GeoIRIS is able to answer analysts' questions in seconds, such as "given a query image, show me database satellite images that have similar objects and spatial relationship that are within a certain radius of a landmark." [Termes IGN] nuageRésumé : (Auteur) Satellites provide unique perspectives on aerosol global and regional spatial and temporal distributions, and offer compelling evidence that visibility and air quality are affected by particulate matter transported over long distances. The heights at which emissions are injected into the atmosphere are major factors governing downwind dispersal. In order to better understand the environmental factors determining injection heights of smoke plumes from wildfires, we have developed a prototype system for automatically searching through several years of MISR and MODIS data to locate fires and the associated smoke plumes and to retrieve injection heights and other relevant measurements from them. We are refining this system and assembling a statistical database, aimed at understanding how injection height relates to the fire severity and local weather conditions. In this paper we focus on our working proof-of-concept system that demonstrates how machine-learning and data mining methods aid in processing of massive volumes of satellite data. Automated algorithms for distinguishing smoke from clouds and other aerosols, identifying plumes, and extracting height data are described. Preliminary results are presented from application to MISR and MODIS data collected over North America during the summer of 2004.
