[Termes IGN] restauration d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) This paper develops a knowledge discovery procedure for extracting knowledge of soil-landscape models from a soil map. It has broad relevance to knowledge discovery from other natural resource maps. The procedure consists of four major steps: data preparation, data preprocessing, pattern extraction, and knowledge consolidation. In order to recover true expert knowledge from the error-prone soil maps, our study pays specific attention to the reduction of representation noise in soil maps. The data preprocessing step has exhibited an important role in obtaining greater accuracy. A specific method for sampling pixels based on modes of environmental histograms has proven to be effective in terms of reducing noise and constructing representative sample sets. Three inductive learning algorithms, the See5 decision tree algorithm, Naïve Bayes, and artificial neural network, are investigated for a comparison concerning learning accuracy and result comprehensibility. See5 proves to be an accurate method and produces the most comprehensible results, which are consistent with the rules (expert knowledge) used in producing the soil map. The incorporation of spatial information into the knowledge discovery process is found not only to improve the accuracy of the extracted knowledge, but also to add to the explicitness and extensiveness of the extracted soil-landscape model. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The unprecedented large size and high dimensionality of existing geographic datasets make the complex patterns that potentially lurk in the data hard to find. Clustering is one of the most important techniques for geographic knowledge discovery. However, existing clustering methods have two severe drawbacks for this purpose. First, spatial clustering methods focus on the specific characteristics of distributions in 2or 3D space, while general-purpose highdimensional clustering methods have limited power in recognizing spatial patterns that involve neighbors. Second, clustering methods in general are not geared toward allowing the humancomputer interaction needed to effectively teaseout complex patterns.
In the current paper, an approach is proposed to open up the "black box" of the clustering process for easy understanding, steering, focusing and interpretation, and thus to support an effective exploration of large and high dimensional geographic data. The proposed approach involves building a hierarchical spatial cluster structure ithin the highdimensional feature space, and using this combined space for discovering multidimensional (combined spatial and nonspatial) patterns with efficient computational clustering methods and highly interactive visualization techniques. More specifically, this includes the integration of: (1) a hierarchical spatial clustering method to generate a 1D spatial cluster ordering that preserves the hierarchical cluster structure, and (2) a density and gridbased technique to effectively support the interactive identification of interesting subspaces and subsequent searching for clusters in each subspace. The implementation of the proposed approach is in a fully open and interactive manner supported by various visualization techniques.

[Termes IGN] système expertRésumé : (Auteur) IKONOS 1 x 1 m panchromatic data fused with 4 X 4 m multispectral data were used for residential house detection in three 1 X 1 km study areas of Columbia, South Carolina. One study area contained houses built in the 1940s, another in the 1970s, and another in the 1990s. An expert system was developed to extract individual houses from the imagery. The system employed a data mining algorithm as the core of an automated knowledge acquisition module. Separate knowledge bases were generated for each study area using training samples and the data mining algorithm in two sequential stages. In the first stage, brightness values and NDVI yielded a knowledge base that was used to locate candidate house pixels. In the second stage, region metrics including size, shape, and a series of context variables were employed. Regions of asphalt roads mistakenly identified by the expert system as houses were removed using road buffers. Also, separate knowledge bases were generated both with and without the use of context variables. Each scenario was compared with a point map of photointerpreted (reference) houses. The photointerpreted database was verified against in situ housing counts. There was a strong increasing trend in both machine and photointerpreter accuracy as housing age decreased, with the highest accuracies (79 88%) in the 1990s study area.
