[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Many real world problems can be expressed as optimisation problems. Solving this kind of problems means to find, among all possible solutions, the one that maximises an evaluation function. One approach to solve this kind of problem is to use an informed search strategy. The principle of this kind of strategy is to use problem-specific knowledge beyond the definition of the problem itself to find solutions more efficiently than with an uninformed strategy. This kind of strategy demands to define problem-specific knowledge (heuristics). The efficiency and the effectiveness of systems based on it directly depend on the used knowledge quality. Unfortunately, acquiring and maintaining such knowledge can be fastidious. The objective of the work presented in this paper is to propose an automatic knowledge revision approach for systems based on an informed tree search strategy. Our approach consists in analysing the system execution logs and revising knowledge based on these logs by modelling the revision problem as a knowledge space exploration problem. We present an experiment we carried out in an application domain where informed search strategies are often used: cartographic generalisation. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a novel rough set approach to discover classification rules in real-valued spatial data in general and remotely sensed data in particular. A knowledge induction process is formulated to select optimal decision rules with a minimal set of features necessary and sufficient for a remote sensing classification task. The approach first converts a real-valued or integer-valued decision system into an interval-valued information system. A knowledge induction procedure is then formulated to discover all classification rules hidden in the information system. Two real-life applications are made to verify and substantiate the conceptual arguments. It demonstrates that the proposed approach can effectively discover in remotely sensed data the optimal spectral bands and optimal rule set for a classification task. It is also capable of unraveling critical spectral band(s) discerning certain classes. The framework paves the road for data mining in mixed spatial databases consisting of qualitative and quantitative data. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article summarizes the results of the workshop on Visualization, Analytics & Spatial Decision Support, which took place at the GIScience conference in September 2006. The discussions at the workshop and analysis of the state of the art have revealed a need in concerted cross-disciplinary efforts to achieve substantial progress in supporting space-related decision making. The size and complexity of real-life problems together with their ill-defined nature call for a true synergy between the power of computational techniques and the human capabilities to analyze, envision, reason, and deliberate. Existing methods and tools are yet far from enabling this synergy. Appropriate methods can only appear as a result of a focused research based on the achievements in the fields of geovisualization and information visualization, human-computer interaction, geographic information science, operations research, data mining and machine learning, decision science, cognitive science, and other disciplines. The name 'Geovisual Analytics for Spatial Decision Support' suggested for this new research direction emphasizes the importance of visualization and interactive visual interfaces and the link with the emerging research discipline of Visual Analytics. This article, as well as the whole special issue, is meant to attract the attention of scientists with relevant expertise and interests to the major challenges requiring multidisciplinary efforts and to promote the establishment of a dedicated research community where an appropriate range of competences is combined with an appropriate breadth of thinking. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) The research reported in this paper focuses on integrating analytical and visual methods in order to explore complex patterns in geo-related multivariate data sets and to understand the changes in patterns over time. The goal is to provide techniques that are able to analyse real-world Data Warehouses, a typical architecture to manage such geo-related multidimensional data sets, in order to support the analyst's decision-making process. Challenges arise because real-world applications usually have to deal with millions of records, with dozens of dimensions, and spatio-temporal context. Therefore, a tight integration of automated analysis and interactive visualizations is needed (as proposed in the context of Visual Analytics). Our approach uses the well-studied capabilities provided by Data Warehouses supporting knowledge discovery and decision-making to analyse spatio-temporal behaviour of pattern in high-dimensional spaces. The topic of the paper is to show possible interplays between automated analysis and geo-spatial visualization.
