[Termes IGN] spécificationRésumé : (Auteur) We analyze the state of the art of content-based retrieval in Earth observation image archives focusing on complete systems showing promise for operational implementation. The different paradigms at the basis of the main system families are introduced. The approaches taken are considered, focusing in particular on the phases after primitive feature extraction. The solutions envisaged for the issues related to feature simplification and synthesis, indexing, semantic labeling are reviewed. The methodologies for query specification and execution are evaluated. Conclusions are drawn on the state of published research in Earth observation (EO) mining. Earth modeling must now face new challenges since petroleum exploration no longer consists in only investigating newly identified resources, but also in re-evaluating the potential of previously investigated reservoirs in the light of new prospecting data and of revised interpretations. Earth models incorporate a variety of different interpretations made on various types of data at successive steps of the modeling process. However, current modeling procedures provide no way to link a range of data and interpretations with a final earth model. For this reason, sharing and exchanging information about the model building process is at present a major difficulty. Recently, the term "Shared Earth Modeling" has been used for expressing the idea that earth models should be built in such a way that experts and end users can have access, at any time, to all the information incorporated into the model. This information does not only concern the data, but also the knowledge that geoscientists produce by interpreting these data. Accordingly, practical solutions must be studied for operating a knowledge-driven approach of Shared Earth Modeling. This is the goal of this book. This study of earth subsurface modeling is intended for several categories of readers. It concerns in the first place geologists, engineers and managers involved in the study and evaluation of subsurface reservoirs and hydrocarbon exploration. Relying on recent progress in various fields of computer sciences, the authors present innovative solutions for solving the critical issue of knowledge exchange at key steps of the modeling process. This book will also be of interest to researchers in computer science and, more generally, to engineers, researchers and students who wish to apply advanced knowledge-based techniques to complex engineering problems. [Termes IGN] recrutementRésumé : (Auteur) Data mining is the process of analyzing data from different perspectives to find new, unique and useful information to aid in decision-making. The reserves of information held by universities in conjunction with data generated from surveys and demographic studies can provide insights to aid curriculum development and recruitment strategies. University administrators and accreditation boards evaluate the success of degree programs, in part, by the success of their graduates. Students succeed through faculty and administration developing coursework and programs that will best prepare them for the work environment. Of concern to university personnel is how faculty and administration can effectively evaluate and modify curriculum and student recruitment to match the dynamic environment of the business world. Universities can learn from private sector business methods to accomplish this. Research being conducted in the Department of Geomatics at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is intended to explore and implement data analysis and data mining techniques to create a new informational feedback loop to equip faculty for program evaluation and systematic adaptation. As a technologically driven industry, changes in the geospatial workplace are fast. Employers want graduates ready to transition into their world quickly and efficiently. For our graduates to be competitive, the geomatics program must recruit effectively and adapt coursework to match or exceed the rate of change within the geospatial industry. Continually updating curriculum and consistently recruiting the right students will best supply a constantly changing and evolving business environment with the people companies need. The paper is an interim report on the first stages of a data mining project. It shows what can be done with very basic analysis, and also points out a major problem for data mining projects: getting all the data sets into a similar and compatible format that allows deeper analysis. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) From the application of information theory capacity limits of maps are derived and some cartographic rules are formulated—based on theoretical models and perception studies. The perception study shows that for a relief map with coloured height intervals the channel capacity, as defined in information theory, is reached at seven~~eight height classes. Generally, the length of a visual variable may be characterized by the channel capacity of the map. This theoretical study shows how increased attention should be paid to perceptual separation as the number of categories increases. The requirement becomes more and more crucial as the number of categories exceeds five. The principle of group visibility is formulated and demonstrated. Group visibility considers the visibility of groups of map features and may be utilized in a visual search for geographical patterns. The quantitative measures presented offers computational methods to control group visibility for example in an interactive visualization system.
