[Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Conventional orthorectification software cannot handle surface occlusions and image visibility. The approach presented here synthesizes related work in photogrammetry and computer graphics/vision to automatically produce orthographic and perspective views based on fully 3D surface data (supplied by laser scanning). Surface occlusions in the direction of projection are detected to create the depth map of the new image. This information allows identifying, by visibility checking through back-projection of surface triangles, all source images which are entitled to contribute color to each pixel of the novel image. Weighted texture blending allows regulating the local radiometric contribution of each source image involved, while outlying color values are automatically discarded with a basic statistical test. Experimental results from a close-range project indicate that this fusion of laser scanning with multi-view photogrammetry could indeed combine geometric accuracy with high visual quality and speed. A discussion of intended improvements of the algorithm is also included. [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (Auteur) Rigorous satellite and airborne sensor models are nowadays commonly used to set accurate mapping applications trough accurate geodesy and ground cartography. Last decade improvement have enlightened the cartography community to the performance of such physical models to improve the map accuracy to a metric -or better- cartographic accuracy limit depending on the sensor type, math model robustness, ground control point quality and error dispersion control throughout the block adjustment of large image sets. Such operations allow to produce maps from high and very high resolutions sensors, optical and SAR in different contexts and for multiples applications such as urban mapping, rural land registration, precision farming... Nevertheless, this methodology still involves some limits in the case this is wether partly farther not possible to obtain a reliable enough positional ground reference associated to the mapping project. Various orbital and ground geodetic location systems are now commonly used among earth observation satellites, such as GPS and DORIS. Some recent experimental and operational works that uses an original methodology still based on a rigorous sensor model and the support of a robust block adjustment have proven the ability to recombine series of sensor images on several orbits or flight paths. These tied together with the preservation of the sensor model, its refined earth position and support of a reliable digital elevation model, allow to georeference image blocks based on the internal airborne / spaceborne ground coordinates processed by the operator trough the satellite positioning system. Such refined ground controls and a physical rigorous sensor model association now enables image block georeferencing to the ground with a final accuracy compatible enough with mapping standards even without reliable ground planimetric reference (GCP). Several mapping tests controlled with various aerial, optical and SAR satellite sensors, such as Ikonos, Quickbird, Orbview-3, Envisat ASAR and SPOT 5, the Vexcel UltraCAM-D digital airborne camera along with IMU and GPS, as well as ground reference sources have proven that such methodology and resulting processed imagery makes possible the use of high and very high resolution satellite imagery for a much wider application field, such as marine cartography, accurately geo-positioned defense imagery recognition on remote or not accessible locations. Our scope is precisely to determine which methodology used among those described sensors would apply to which case with error dispersion control capability or not, to validate such a mapping methodology and process, and finally foresee the possible applications field for the mapping industry. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) While photogrammetry is often used as a mapping tool on its own, GPS an aid the technique by supplying accurate coordinates for digital cameras. In turn, photogrammetry can come to the aid of a GPS/INS positioning system by bridging gaps in GPS/INS positions, which frequently occur in urban environments. [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (Auteur) Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are traditionally acquired from a stereo pair of aerial photographs sequentially captured by an airborne metric camera. Standard DEM extraction techniques can be naturally extended to satellite imagery, but the particular characteristics of satellite imaging can cause difficulties. The spacecraft ephemeris with respect to the ground site during image collects is the most important factor in the elevation extraction process. When the angle of separation between the stereo images is small, the extraction process typically produces measurements with low accuracy, while a large angle of separation can cause an excessive number of erroneous points in the DEM from occlusion of ground areas. The use of three or more images registered to the same ground area can potentially reduce these problems and improve the accuracy of the extracted DEM. The pointing capability of some sensors, such as the Multispectral Thermal Imager (MTI), allows for multiple collects of the same area from different perspectives. This functionality of MTI makes it a good candidate for the implementation of a DEM extraction algorithm using multiple images for improved accuracy. Evaluation of this capability and development of algorithms to geometrically model the MTI sensor and extract DEMs from multi-look MTI imagery are described in this paper. An RMS elevation error of 6.3-meters is achieved using 11 ground test points, while the MTI band has a 5-meter ground sample distance.
