[Termes IGN] projection Universal Transverse MercatorRésumé : (Auteur) Implementations of two algorithms for the transverse Mercator projection are described; these achieve accuracies close to machine precision. One is based on the exact equations of Thompson and Lee and the other uses an extension of Krüger’s series for the mapping to higher order. The exact method provides an accuracy of 9 nm over the entire ellipsoid, while the errors in the series method are less than 5 nm within 3900 km of the central meridian. In each case, the meridian convergence and scale are also computed with similar accuracy. The speed of the series method is competitive with other less accurate algorithms and the exact method is about five times slower. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (auteur) The geoid low over French Polynesia has been previously interpreted as the signature of an upper mantle upwelling associated with a low-viscosity zone located immediately below the lithosphere. We propose here an alternative explanation using new high-quality satellite gravity data and fluid mechanics constraints. We thus discuss the origin of the high concentration of hotspots in the Central Pacific, which is still debated. Satellite gravity data from the GRACE mission analyzed with wavelets allow us to better characterize the geoid low on French Polynesia and the large-scale positive geoid anomaly 600 km east of the Line Islands chain. We show that the geoid anomalies are consistent with thermochemical oscillating domes and we bring constraints on their density contrast and their upper limit depth under this hypothesis. The Central Pacific mantle would contain two thermochemical instabilities at different stages of their development: a rising dome (lighter) extending approximately from the CMB up to the transition zone beneath the South Pacific Superswell, toped by secondary plumes that generate short-lived hot spot chains, and a sinking dome (denser) in the lower mantle beneath the area located 600 km east of the Line Islands chain. Plate reconstructions further show that the latter could also have generated the Southern Line Islands 35 M.y. ago and Shatsky Rise 140 M.y. ago when it was in its ascending phase, while the South Pacific dome probably created Darwin Rise 100 M.y. ago in a same type of event. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (auteur) Monitoring vertical land motion is of crucial interest in observations of long-term sea level change and its reconstruction, but is among of the most, yet highly challenging, tasks of space geodesy. The aim of the paper is to compare the vertical velocity estimates of Tahiti Island obtained from five independent geophysical measurements, namely a decade of GPS and DORIS data, 17 years sea level difference (altimeter minus tide gauge (TG)) time series, ICE-5G (VM2 L90) Post-Glacial Rebound (PGR) model predictions, and coral reef stratigraphy. Except for the Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA also known as PGR) model, all the techniques are in a good agreement and reveal a very slow subsidence of the Tahiti Island averaged at −0.5 mm/yr which is barely significant. Nevertheless, despite of that vertical motion, Tahiti remains an ideal location for the calibration of satellite altimeter measurements. [Termes IGN] océanographie dynamiqueRésumé : (Auteur) With satellite radar altimetry, the oceanic geoid can be determined with high precision and resolution. Double differentiation of these data along satellite altimeter ground tracks yields along-track gravity gradients that can be used to compute vertical gravity gradients at ground track crossovers. One way to counteract the noise amplification due to the differentiation is to smooth the data using smoothing splines. Although the effect of satellite altimeter data noise has been investigated to some extent, the associated systematic errors have not been assessed so far. Here we show that some of the systematic errors cannot be neglected. In particular, we found that the negligence of the dynamic ocean topography (DOT) may introduce errors that are greater than the measurement noise induced errors. If the gravity gradients are to be used for GOCE validation, then also in this case the DOT may not be neglected as the signal at GOCE altitude of 260 km may be above the GOCE requirements. In addition, we show that the altimetry derived gravity gradients cannot be compared one-to-one with those in a local Cartesian frame. The differences are small compared with the total signal, but they may be larger than the satellite altimetry induced stochastic errors and may be above the GOCE requirements. The cubic splines second derivative truncation error requires the use of 10 Hz altimeter data for the computation of gravity gradients at the Earth's surface, while 1 Hz data are sufficient for validation at GOCE altitude.
