[Termes IGN] séismeRésumé : (auteur) Image correlation is one of the most efficient techniques to determine horizontal ground displacements due to earthquakes, landslides, ice flows or sand dune migrations. Analyzing these deformations allows a better understanding of the causes and mechanisms of the events. By using sub-pixel correlation on before- and after-event ortho-images obtained from high resolution satellite images it is possible to compute the displacement field with high planimetric resolution. In this paper, we focus on measuring the ground displacements due to seismotectonic events. The three sub-pixel correlators used are: COSI-Corr – developed by Caltech, a free, closed-source correlator, dependent on commercial software (ENVI) and widely used by the geoscience community for measuring ground displacement; Medicis – developed by CNES, also a closed-source correlator capable of measuring this type of deformation; and MicMac – developed by IGN, the free open-source correlator we study and tune for measuring fine ground displacements. We measured horizontal ground deformation using these three correlators on SPOT images in three study cases: the 2001 Kokoxili earthquake, the 2005 dyke intrusion in the Afar depression and the 2008 Yutian earthquake. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (auteur) We present a new method for high-precision real-time earthquake monitoring that focuses on station velocity using single-frequency GPS receivers. By means of GPS absolute velocity determination (AVD), real-time station velocity of millimeter per second precision can be obtained epoch by epoch using the GPS broadcast ephemeris. While the monitoring stations are considered stationary during aseismic time, the coseismic displacement can be instantaneously recorded by the velocity changes. The 1-Hz GPS data at selected stations during the M w 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake, the M w 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake and the M w 6.6 Lushan earthquake are processed with the AVD approach. The results indicate that the phase and amplitude of AVD-derived velocity time series induced by the earthquakes coincide with those derived from post-mission kinematic PPP approach. Even when coseismic displacements at some stations are occasionally not visible in the position time series, the velocity series can still clearly manifest the earthquake displacement signal. With the AVD approach, the precision and reliability of the real-time monitoring can be improved significantly. It is also indicated the velocity series can be used for fast post-earthquake assessment such as rapid determination of earthquake magnitude, locating epicenter, determining seismic wave propagation velocity and other earthquake studies.

[Termes IGN] sismicitéRésumé : (auteur) We investigate how two decades of coseismic deformations affect time series of GPS station coordinates (Global Navigation Satellite System) and what constraints geodetic observations give on earthquake scaling laws. We developed a simple but rapid model for coseismic deformations, assuming different earthquake scaling relations, that we systematically applied on earthquakes with magnitude larger than 4. We found that coseismic displacements accumulated during the last two decades can be larger than 10m locally and that the cumulative displacement is not only due to large earthquakes but also to the accumulation of many small motions induced by smaller earthquakes. Then, investigating a global network of GPS stations, we demonstrate that a systematic global modeling of coseismic deformations helps greatly to detect discontinuities in GPS coordinate time series, which are still today one of the major sources of error in terrestrial reference frame construction (e.g., the International Terrestrial Reference Frame). We show that numerous discontinuities induced by earthquakes are too small to be visually detected because of seasonal variations and GPS noise that disturb their identification. However, not taking these discontinuities into account has a large impact on the station velocity estimation, considering today’s precision requirements. Finally, six groups of earthquake scaling laws were tested. Comparisons with our GPS time series analysis on dedicated earthquakes give insights on the consistency of these scaling laws with geodetic observations and Okada coseismic approach.
