[Termes IGN] tectonique des plaquesRésumé : (auteur) Differences in marine terrace elevations across the Pacific coast of North America have long been assumed to be a result of differences in the rates of tectonic motion. However, other processes, particularly glacio-isostatic adjustment, lead to regional variations in sea levels. In this study, we compiled the elevations of marine isotope stage (MIS) 5e (ca. 119–129 ka), 5c (ca. 106 ka), and 5a (ca. 84 ka) terraces across the Pacific coast of central North America and compared these regional variations in elevation with model predictions of glacio-isostatic adjustment after correcting for tectonics. These predictions are generally consistent with the observed trends in the elevations of the terraces and show that this process created up to 20 m of coeval variation in local sea levels along the Pacific coast of central North America (between 20°N and 45°N) during MIS 5c and MIS 5a, but less, ∼4 m, during MIS 5e. Accounting for glacio-isostatic adjustment reduces the variability in uplift rates calculated at individual locations using different-aged terraces as datums. Ignoring glacio-isostatic adjustment leads to overestimated uplift rates by an average of 40%, but up to 72%, across the Pacific coast of central North America. An understanding of regional variations in glacio-isostatic adjustment–corrected sea levels also contributes to the correct identification of marine terraces with mistaken ages.

[Termes IGN] tectonique des plaquesRésumé : (auteur) Okinotorishima Island is the southern most island of Japan, located on the Philippine Sea plate. On the island, Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) set triangulation points and a GPS continuous observation station in 1989 and 2005, respectively, and has conducted GPS surveys since 1992 for surveying and crustal deformation monitoring. This report describes the displacement of Okinotorishima Island from 2005 to 2013 as a result of re-analyzing GPS data using GAMIT software. The displacement suggests that Okinotorishima Island has moved WNW at Vns = +21.6 mm/year and Vew = -58.0 mm/year, or moved N66.8°W at 61.9 mm/year. The rate of collection of data at the island is lower than that of the GSI’s other GNSS stations because the station is an extremely isolated island in the Pacific Ocean. In order to monitor the movement of Philippine Sea plate, it is necessary to continue the maintenance of observation devices and enhance the station’s data availability. However, from historic earthquakes it is known that events with large magnitudes, above 6, have occurred. A major task was to extract the tectonic pattern of the velocity field based on Global navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) campaign type data (CHTRF 2010 solution) given the fact that the noise level and local influences are within the same order of magnitude as the deformation occurring.
The introduction of the adaptive least-squares collocation (ALSC) and its enhancement to determine the tectonically driven deformation field allowed to extract a reliable kinematic model for Switzerland. The final solution consists of the velocity field and its derivative, the strain rate field. Due to the relatively high density of measurement points, re-measured three or more times, the field could be retrieved from the data set. The horizontal velocities are mostly below 1 mm/yr and the uplift rates, determined from precise levelling, between 0 and 1.5 mm/yr. The deformation rates deduced amount to 25 nstrain/yr.
The thin plate model allowed to estimate also the vertical strain rate which was not possible to retrieve by the collocation technique alone. This is due to the lack of missing measurements within the crust since all levelling and GNSS measurements are performed on the surface. The comparison of the strain rate field with seismological data showed a good accordance. The horizontal strain field confirms a compression of 15 nstrain/yr perpendicular to the Alpine chain. In the canton Valais seismic recordings observed extensional stress regimes. The collocation technique could reproduce the extension and retrieved a strain rate of 20 nstrain/yr. At the boundary of the study area uncertainties exists because of missing data outside Switzerland. This is a particular problem in the city of Basel, which lies at the southern end of the Upper Rheingraben. The 3-D strain rate tensor, using the thin plate model, has shown mostly similar fault plane solutions as the one obtained from earthquake analysis. The same is valid for the strain rate energy compared with the seismic energy released by earthquakes. The highest strain energy density is found in the eastern and western part of the Swiss Alps.
