[Termes IGN] relations plante - solRésumé : (auteur) Key message : Exceedance of critical limits in soil solution samples was more frequent in intensively monitored forest plots across Europe with critical loads for acidity and eutrophication exceeded compared to other plots from the same network. Elevated inorganic nitrogen concentrations in soil solution tended to be related to less favourable nutritional status.
Context : Forests have been exposed to elevated atmospheric deposition of acidifying and eutrophying sulphur and nitrogen compounds for decades. Critical loads have been identified, below which damage due to acidification and eutrophication are not expected to occur.
Aims : We explored the relationship between the exceedance of critical loads and inorganic nitrogen concentration, the base cation to aluminium ratio in soil solutions, as well as the nutritional status of trees.
Methods : We used recent data describing deposition, elemental concentrations in soil solution and foliage, as well as the level of damage to foliage recorded at forest plots of the ICP Forests intensive monitoring network across Europe.
Results : Critical loads for inorganic nitrogen deposition were exceeded on about a third to half of the forest plots. Elevated inorganic nitrogen concentrations in soil solution occurred more frequently among these plots. Indications of nutrient imbalances, such as low magnesium concentration in foliage or discolouration of needles and leaves, were seldom but appeared more frequently on plots where the critical limits for soil solution were exceeded.
Conclusion : The findings support the hypothesis that elevated nitrogen and sulphur deposition can lead to imbalances in tree nutrition.

[Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Key message : Atmospheric deposition of nitrogen compounds and soil and foliar variables related to N deposition resulted important factors accounting for the variability of defoliation in European forest plots.
Context : Nitrogen (N) deposition has increased in the northern hemisphere because of anthropogenic-related emission of N compounds. Increased N availability may have an adverse impact on forest sustainability.
Aims : This study aims to test the importance of throughfall N (Nthr) deposition in explaining the variability of the frequency of trees with defoliation >25 % (F 25), an indicator of forest condition.
Methods : A pan-European data set (71 plots) with enhanced quality control was considered. The additive effect of Nthr-related predictors (identified conceptually and by rank correlation) in explaining F 25 was investigated by partial least square regression in comparison with a reference model based on site, stand, management and climate data. Reported damage to foliage, Nthr deposition, foliar N ratios and mineral top-soil variables were added stepwise to the reference model.
Results : N-related variables improved defoliation models. Higher Nthr deposition led to higher F 25 for beech and Norway spruce, while the effect was opposite for Scots pine. Higher foliar N ratios led to higher F 25 for all species.
Conclusion : Nthr deposition, damage to foliage, foliar N/P, N/Ca, N/Mg, N/K, top-soil pH, C/N and exchangeable base cation resulted important factors (although with possible diverse effect) in explaining the variability of F 25 among plots.

[Termes IGN] Viet NamRésumé : (auteur) A transboundary river is a river that flows through two or more countries. Due to the international policies of the government in each country, it is difficult to investigate the pollution conditions in a transboundary watershed. In this study, pollution sources in the Red River Valley, Southeast Asia were derived from Google Earth by visual interpretation. Based on the derived pollution sources and a simple scoring system, a pollution index map was produced, which provides useful information for intergovernmental cooperation on the water environment in this transboundary watershed. In addition, the method mentioned in this article suggests an efficient and low-cost way to investigate pollution conditions at large scale, which can also be applied to other transboundary watersheds in the future. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Mapping drinking water flow is a real challenge not only to detect water leaks but also to control the quality of the water. In France, 900,000 km of water pipe serves 99% of the population. A recent law imposes the mapping of these pipelines on a known geographical system with a planar positional accuracy from 0.4 to 1.5 m according to the age and type of the pipeline. Wireless sensors and models based on computational fluid mechanics (CFD) allow to study flow and to reconstruct parameters such as velocity, pressure and a chemical concentration at each point. This information can be used to detect leaks and to control the concentration of chlorine or other chemical products. However, this information is not easy to map on GIS due to the small width of water pipe and the very high quantity of points necessary for data flow computation. In this research work, we propose solutions to map this information at different levels of detail with other information such as roads and buildings. We first propose to use area symbols instead of punctual symbols to improve zoom-in visual effects. We also propose to generalize initial water data for zoom-out processes. We use the axis of the water pipe as basic geometry and we segment it. We then compute a generalized value of pressure, velocity or chemical concentration for each segment with specific function adapted to the property we wish to study. We propose a conceptual data schema that describes the required information to map this data at different levels of detail. The solution has been fully implemented on experimental data and illustrated by means of a dedicated web mapping that proposes a set of GIS functions such as the selection of the data, zooming functions but also the animation to see the propagation of a chemical product in the water pipe.
