[Termes IGN] ressources forestièresRésumé : (auteur) We used remotely sensed data from the Landsat-8 and WorldView-2 satellites to estimate vegetation burn severity of the Creek Fire on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, where wildfire occurrences affect the Tribe’s crucial livestock and logging industries. Accurate pre- and post-fire canopy maps at high (0.5-meter) resolution were created from WorldView-2 data to generate canopy loss maps, and multiple indices from pre- and post-fire Landsat-8 images were used to evaluate vegetation burn severity. Normalized difference vegetation index based vegetation burn severity map had the highest correlation coefficients with canopy loss map from WorldView-2. Two distinct approaches - canopy loss mapping from WorldView-2 and spectral index differencing from Landsat-8 - agreed well with the field-based burn severity estimates and are both effective for vegetation burn severity mapping. Canopy loss maps created with WorldView-2 imagery add to a short list of accurate vegetation burn severity mapping techniques that can help guide effective management of forest resources on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, and the broader fire-prone regions of the Southwest. [Termes IGN] zone sinistréeRésumé : (Auteur) Context : In the Mediterranean area, different post-fire management strategies are used for coppices of resprouting species to promote a more regular forest structure, enhance plant growth, and reduce fire risk. However, the effects of these management treatments on forest-associated fauna are unknown, which in turn could be limiting their beneficial effects.
Aims : The aim of this work was to determine whether forest management of a recently burned area dominated by a vigorous resprouting tree species (Arbutus unedo L.) affects ant communities.
Methods : Ant communities, sampled using pitfall traps, were examined from unmanaged and selective thinning coppices of A. unedo. Ants are here used as bioindicators of ecosystem health and surrogates for other animal groups.
Results : Very limited effects of these post-fire management strategies on the structure and composition of ant communities were found. The lack of effects could be due to the reported small changes in physical conditions among treatments; or either, the most sensitive ant species to these post-fire management treatments might be the same ones affected by fire and, consequently, the ant species that would potentially be affected most were no longer in the study area.
Conclusion : The lack of any significant effects caused by these post-fire management practices on the associated fauna of A. unedo coppices points out the suitability of these treatments in these circumstances.

[Termes IGN] rétrodiffusionRésumé : (Auteur) A discrete scattering model, based on the radiative-transfer theory, is used to simulate the backscattering of burned pine canopies at C-band. The model is first parameterized either with direct field measurements on a selected burned area in Greece or with proper estimations of the required variables, for which direct measurements were not possible. The simulated backscatter at VV polarization was compared against European Remote Sensing 2 (ERS-2) observations. The comparison was based on the observed backscattering of nine burned plots, during four different postfire acquisitions (n=36). In general, the model provides satisfying estimations of the backscattering with a root-mean-square error of 1.01 dB. The copolar signal for both HH and VV showed a mild decrease with increasing fire impacts and was considerably affected by the incidence angle. From the experiments performed in the simulated environment, it is concluded that the SAR copolar (C-band) backscatter varies with respect to certain fire impact levels. Other important acquisition- or stand-dependent variables (such as incidence angle and snag age) were also found to impact the relationship between backscatter and fire impacts. Finally, the backscattering variability on increasing volumetric soil moisture (VSM) and snag moisture was examined. The increase of VSM from 20% to 30% amplified the signal in both copolarized bands by 1.2-1.5 dB. This amplification was more apparent on VV polarization than in HH polarization. Instead, the HH signal proved to be more sensitive on the increase of snag moisture, which was tested under a stable dry soil. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (auteur) Fuel type mapping of the wildland-urban interface (WUI) in support of fire spread simulation modelling should include both natural and urban features. The objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of (1) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) structural data, (2) ortho-image data and (3) a combination of both as input to an object-based classification approach for mapping fuels within two WUI areas in San Diego, California. A separability analysis was utilized to determine the surface topographical and spectral layers most influential for discriminating WUI fuels. An accuracy assessment revealed that the combination of LiDAR and ortho-image data inputs substantially increased classification accuracy by 20–30% and achieved overall accuracies > 80%. Results from the study provide knowledge on how reliable fuel types within the WUI can be mapped using high-resolution LiDAR and ortho-image data while presenting new insights into fuel type mapping.
