[Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (Auteur) Crown base height (CBH) is an important factor in relation to several characteristics of the tree stock. This paper introduces approaches for estimating tree-level CBH from airborne laser scanning (ALS) data that make use of features of computational geometry. For that purpose, the concepts of Delaunay triangulations and alpha shapes were applied and compared with approaches based on analysing return frequencies and predicting CBH by linear regression. These approaches were evaluated using test data on a total of 185 Scots pine trees, of which 136 were of sawlog size, that were detected and delineated from ALS data with a density of approximately 4 returns m-2. The results suggest that variables based on the frequencies of crown returns within predefined height bins are the most accurate for estimating CBH. By combining the best CBH estimate with the estimated tree height in linear regression, a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 1.4 m (14%) was achieved when all study trees were considered. The estimation was generally less accurate for the trees smaller than those of sawlog size. Although the accuracy of estimating CBH is lower using the three-dimensional (3D) geometry approaches presented here, they are considered to have potential for further development. [Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (auteur) Planar partitions—full tessellations of the plane into non-overlapping polygons—are frequently used in GIS to model concepts such as land cover, cadastral parcels or administrative boundaries. Since in practice planar partitions are often stored as a set of individual objects (polygons) to which attributes are attached (e.g. stored with a shapefile), and since different errors/mistakes can be introduced during their construction, manipulation or exchange, several inconsistencies will often arise in practice. The inconsistencies are for instance overlapping polygons, gaps and unconnected polygons. We present in this paper a novel algorithm to validate such planar partitions. It uses a constrained triangulation as a support for the validation, and permits us to avoid different problems that arise with existing solutions based on the construction of a planar graph. We describe in the paper the details of our algorithm, our implementation, how inconsistencies can be detected, and the experiments we have made with real-world data (the CORINE2000 dataset). [Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a new type of point-pattern analytical method, Network-Based Variable-Distance Clumping Method (NT-VCM), to analyse the distribution pattern of point objects and phenomena observed on a network. It is an extension of Planar Variable-Distance Clumping Method (PL-VCM) that was previously defined for point pattern analysis in Euclidian space. The purpose for developing NT-VCM is to identify point agglomerations across different scales called multi-scale network-based clumps among distributed points along a network. The paper first defines a network-based clump as a set of points where all its elements are found within a certain shortest-path distance from at least one other element of the same set. It then proposes NT-VCM as a technique to extract statistically significant multi-scale clumps on a network. The paper also proposes an efficient algorithm for computing NT-VCM, which involves the use of the Voronoi diagram, the Delaunay diagram and the minimum spanning tree that are adapted and newly extended for the purpose of analysis on a network. A comparative study of NT-VCM and PL-VCM using commercial facility data reveals a notable difference in the location as well as the size of the significant multi-scale clumps detected in the both cases. Results from the empirical study confirm that NT-VCM accounts for the actual network distance between the points, thus providing a more accurate description of point agglomerations along the network than PL-VCM does. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Geographic information systems (GIS) are generally used for representation, analysis and management of marine resource data. One of the most important resources intensively studied by marine biologists is fish stock dynamics. Fish aggregations are a fundamental component of fish stock dynamics that must be well understood to establish efficient recovery strategies in the context of declining aquatic resources. Despite many interesting capabilities of current GIS, these tools are prone to problems due to the 3D and dynamic nature of the marine data, including fisheries data. This paper proposes a new approach for modelling and visualizing fish aggregations in a 3D space. The proposed approach is based on an integrated approach using dynamic Delaunay tetrahedralization and the á-shapes 3D clustering algorithm. The proposed approach is first validated using several experimental data sets. Next, it is applied to acoustic fisheries data to extract, visualize and analyze fish aggregations. The proposed approach also has the potential for tracking and studying fish dynamics and behaviour, if needed. At the end of the paper, some results are presented, and the benefits and limitations of the proposed 3D model are discussed.
