[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a typification method for linear pattern in urban building generalization. The proposed method includes two processes. Firstly, structural knowledge in terms of linear pattern is detected using a two-step algorithm taking the advantages of Gestalt visual perception, computational geometry and graph theory. Spatial neighbourhood is captured using interpolated constrained Delaunay triangulation and the resulting proximity graph is pruned to be heterogeneous to get acceptable linear patterns with regard to Gestalt visual perception. Then, a typification strategy is proposed, in which typification is regarded as a progressive and iterative process consisting of elimination, exaggeration and displacement. The typification strategy iteratively executes eliminating the building with minimum overall effect, exaggerating remaining buildings considering key location and spatial characteristics and displacing them to preserve the linear pattern until elimination quantity is satisfied. Experiments show that this proposed strategy is effective and linear patterns are guaranteed with correctness and completeness. [Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (Auteur) Proportional circle maps are a popular method for visualizing quantitative data on a map. Circles are scaled proportionally based on the data provided; larger circles represent larger quantities. The circles require two values, a location and a numeric quantity. For data that have a wide range of values, the resulting map will produce clutter and overlap in which large symbols obscure the information contained in smaller circles. Some previous solutions to this problem are modifying and improving the contrast between symbols, or using stacking algorithms so all symbols are visible. This article proposes the displaced proportional symbol map, which displaces the symbol's location based on the amount of overlap between neighbouring circles. At the same time, it preserves the location of non-overlapping symbols, which distinguishes it from the circular cartogram. The displacement is automated through the proximity stress model algorithm for node overlap removal. This algorithm was originally designed for graph layouts with overlapping nodes, but was modified here for circular symbols and map layout. The result is a map with improved clarity and the ability to add labelling to a cluttered proportional circle map. [Termes IGN] visibilitéRésumé : (auteur) Empty-region graphs are well-studied in Computer Graphics, Geometric Modeling, Computational Geometry, as well as in Robotics and Computer Vision. The vertices of these graphs are points in space, and two vertices are connected by an arc if there exists an empty region of a certain shape and size between them. In most of the graphs discussed in the literature, the empty region is assumed to be a circle or the union/intersection of circles. In this paper we propose a new type of empty-region graphs—the γ-visibility graph. This graph can accommodate a variety of shapes of empty regions and may be defined in any dimension. Interestingly, we will show that commonly-used shapes are a special case of our graph. In this sense, our graph generalizes some empty-region graphs. Though this paper is mostly theoretical, it may have practical implication—the numerous applications that make use of empty-region graphs would be able to select the best shape that suits the problem at hand. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Data about points of interest (POI) have been widely used in studying urban land use types and for sensing human behavior. However, it is difficult to quantify the correct mix or the spatial relations among different POI types indicative of specific urban functions. In this research, we develop a statistical framework to help discover semantically meaningful topics and functional regions based on the co-occurrence patterns of POI types. The framework applies the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic modeling technique and incorporates user check-in activities on location-based social networks. Using a large corpus of about 100,000 Foursquare venues and user check-in behavior in the 10 most populated urban areas of the US, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methodology by identifying distinctive types of latent topics and, further, by extracting urban functional regions using K-means clustering and Delaunay triangulation spatial constraints clustering. We show that a region can support multiple functions but with different probabilities, while the same type of functional region can span multiple geographically non-adjacent locations. Since each region can be modeled as a vector consisting of multinomial topic distributions, similar regions with regard to their thematic topic signatures can be identified. Compared with remote sensing images which mainly uncover the physical landscape of urban environments, our popularity-based POI topic modeling approach can be seen as a complementary social sensing view on urban space based on human activities. The evaluation of building patterns is a difficult spatial analysis problem that exhibits properties of symbolization, homogeneity and regularity. Open issues in this field include the development of approaches for representing building patterns and vector-based methods for computing various pattern metrics. In the image analysis domain, there are many methods for pattern recognition (e.g., texture analysis), but there are few corresponding solutions for vector data. The aim of this research is to develop several building pattern metrics and offer a texton co-occurrence matrix (TCM)-based method to quantitatively evaluate the features of building patterns. The procedure first constructs a spatial field based on a Delaunay triangulation skeleton to partition a set of buildings into a set of tessellation cells. The tessellations of building clusters have a similar structure as image representations, in that each cell corresponds to an image pixel. We then use the texton analysis to establish a matrix to describe the tessellation structure, including the neighboring relationships and individual attribute information. Finally, a set of feature descriptors is obtained from the TCM to capture the texture-related information of building groups. Through experiments on building pattern analysis and spatial queries, we show that the results of TCM-based evaluation of building patterns are consistent with those of human cognition.
