A procedure of restoring hemispherical images obtained with a hemispheric view CCD-radiometer is suggested. The circular hemispheric image is projected onto the sphere and Wiener filtering on the sphere is performed. For building the Wiener filter the point spread function of the instrument was measured in the laboratory, and test images of (partially) controlled radiance were measured. The procedure is applied for the correction of hemispherical radiometric images taken under forest canopy. In non-corrected near infrared images the signal of sky pixels in forest canopy gaps near zenith is enhanced 1.4–2.0 times. The applied correction reduces this error to the level of 1.1–1.2. In the red channel these figures are 0.8–0.9 and 0.97–0.99, respectively. [Termes IGN] Total ozone mapping spectrometerRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents the results and satellite intercomparisons for the retrieval of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and land surface bidirectional reflectance using the Multiangle Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR). The algorithm developed is based on inversion of a physical model of light scattering that requires no a priori knowledge of the land surface. The model is evaluated for a number of sites around the world to test its operation over a range of aerosol types and land covers including dark and bright surfaces. Validation is performed using Aerosol Robotic Network ground-based sun-photometer measurements and by intercomparison with independent estimates of AOD derived from spaceborne instruments including Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) aerosol products. Results show good agreement (Pearson's correlation coefficient r2=0.70 for all sites combined) between the AATSR-derived estimates of AOD and the sun-photometer measurements. There is also a high correlation (r2=0.84) between the AATSR- and MISR-derived AOD estimates, but the correlations of the AATSR-derived AOD with MODIS-derived AOD and TOMS aerosol index are lower. In addition, the ability of the sensor to discriminate between different aerosol types is evaluated. Moreover, the estimates of the aerosol properties are used for atmospheric correction of the top-of-atmosphere reflectance. The AATSR surface reflectances are compared with the MODIS bidirectional reflectance distribution function/Albedo and MISR surface products and are shown to correspond with root-mean-square errors of 0.03 and 0.06 or better, respectively. The retrieval method is applied on an image basis resulting in an image of surface reflectance and a separate map of AOD. A map of AOD at 550 nm covering the Sahel and southern Sahara region is presented to demonstrate operation at regional and potentially global scales. [Termes IGN] Vienne (capitale Autriche)Résumé : (Auteur) In this study, we use a technique referred to as Gaussian decomposition for processing and calibrating data acquired with a novel small-footprint airborne laser scanner that digitises the complete waveform of the laser pulses scattered back from the Earth's surface. This paper presents the theoretical basis for modelling the waveform as a series of Gaussian pulses. In this way the range, amplitude, and width are provided for each pulse. Using external reference targets it is also possible to calibrate the data. The calibration equation takes into account the range, the amplitude, and pulse width and provides estimates of the backscatter cross-section of each target. The applicability of this technique is demonstrated based on RIEGL LMS-Q560 data acquired over the city of Vienna. [Termes IGN] résolution d'ambiguïtéRésumé : (Editeur) The GPS carrier-phase observable is more than 100 times more precise than the code-based pseudorange observable. Unfortunatly, it is also ambigous. If we want to use the carrier phase as a range measurement in positioning or navigation, we must account somehow for the unknown integer number of cycles or turns of phase in the initial measurement when a GPS receiver locks onto satellite's L1 or L2 signal carrier. Mathematicians, scientists and engineering have developed clever techniques for helping these integer ambiguities either in real time or in post-processing collected data. However, the success of these techniques in correctly determining the ambiguities depends on several factors including wether a point or relative positioning technique is employed, the length of the baseline in relative positioning, and how well a variety of errors afflicting the measurements can be mitigated. One source of such errors is the ionosphere. In this month's column, we examine how ionospheric modeling helps in the resolution of carrier-phase ambiguities and how the rate of success in correctly determining the ambiguities will be much improved when GPS observations are combined with those of the future Gallileo system.
