[Termes IGN] traitement du signalRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne laser scanning (ALS) is an active remote sensing technique providing range data as 3D point clouds. This paper aims at presenting a survey of the literature related to such techniques, with emphasis on the new sensors called full-waveform lidar systems. Indeed, an emitted laser pulse interacts with complex natural and man-made objects leading to a temporal distortion of the returned energy profile. The new technology of full-waveform laser scanning systems permits one to digitize the complete waveform of each backscattered pulse. Full-waveform lidar data give more control to an end-user in the interpretation process of the physical measurement and provide additional information about the structure and the physical backscattering characteristics of the illuminated surfaces. In this paper, the theoretical principles of full-waveform airborne laser scanning are first described. Afterwards, a review of the main sensors as well as signal processing techniques are presented. We then discuss the interpretation of full-waveform measures with special interest on vegetated and urban areas. [Termes IGN] rugosité du solRésumé : (Auteur) Spatial distribution of surface roughness is very critical information for many application areas. Surface roughness is often characterized using statistical distribution. However, due to the huge complexity associated with spatial soil surfaces it is difficult to accurately characterize surface roughness over large areas using statistical distribution. Surface roughness influences SAR backscatter significantly and therefore for bare soil surfaces, surface roughness plays a critical role in determining the degree of depolarization of the SAR signal. In this paper, surface roughness is retrieved using multi-polarized Envisat-1 ASAR data. The depolarization ratio [ó°VH - ó°VV] has been found to be very sensitive to surface roughness. This study demonstrates an approach that can be used to retrieve quantitative surface roughness values from a space platform without making any assumptions regarding distribution of surface roughness on the ground. [Termes IGN] Vienne (capitale Autriche)Résumé : (Auteur) In this study, we use a technique referred to as Gaussian decomposition for processing and calibrating data acquired with a novel small-footprint airborne laser scanner that digitises the complete waveform of the laser pulses scattered back from the Earth's surface. This paper presents the theoretical basis for modelling the waveform as a series of Gaussian pulses. In this way the range, amplitude, and width are provided for each pulse. Using external reference targets it is also possible to calibrate the data. The calibration equation takes into account the range, the amplitude, and pulse width and provides estimates of the backscatter cross-section of each target. The applicability of this technique is demonstrated based on RIEGL LMS-Q560 data acquired over the city of Vienna. [Termes IGN] surface cultivéeRésumé : (Auteur) The input roughness parameters for electromagnetic backscattering modelling need to be accurate to estimate radar measurements correctly over bare soils, particularly in agricultural environments. This paper propose to evaluate the roughness description in terms of several characterisations through a correlation function using a numerical backscattering model. The experimental database used in this study is based on ASAR-ENVISAT experimental campaigns in the Beauce region (France). Two presentations of the surface height correlation function are proposed in this study. The first one, referred to as the "Ïfunction" fits the experimental correlation functions up to the correlation length, while the second one, the "(a,b) function" fits the correlation function for scales corresponding to positive values. A relationship is proposed between the rms height of soil surface and the shape of the correlation function. Using Ïfunction, comparisons between radar measurements for high incidence angles and simulations based on the numerical backscattering model (moment method) show a good agreement for soil surfaces with an rms height smaller than 2 cm with medium and high soil moisture. [Termes IGN] rétrodiffusionRésumé : (Auteur) This paper introduces a technique to detect the presence of foliage-obscured targets using millimeter-wave radars operating at near-grazing incidence. Radar return from a scene where a target is concealed behind foliage consists of both foliage backscatter return and a polarimetrically distorted and reduced target return. A data acquisition and signal processing technique that takes advantage of temporal decorrelations in foliage is proposed to enhance target detection and resolve it from foliage. Futhermore, an inversion technique is proposed to remove the polarimetric distortions in the target response. The techniques are verified through a series of indoor and outdoor experiments.
