[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser mobileRésumé : (Auteur) Poor GNSS measurements in urban areas caused by blocked GNSS signals and multi-path is a well-known problem, which leads to an inaccurate trajectory estimation of Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) platforms. Consequently, the MLS point cloud contains positioning errors. This paper presents a new method for the automatic extraction of accurate 3D tie points for the trajectory adjustment of MLS platforms in GNSS denied or troubled areas. The new method relies on aerial imagery as a reliable external source of reference provided that accurate exterior orientation parameters are available. Accordingly, one of the main objectives is to register the mobile laser scanning point cloud with corresponding aerial images. The matches between aerial images are used to obtain 3D tie points by forward intersection. By also determining the corresponding locations in the point cloud we obtain a 3D-3D correspondence between the MLS point cloud and the aerial images. In the future, the obtained 3D-3D correspondences will be used for trajectory adjustment. Our automatic tie point extraction procedure is tested on two independent MLS point clouds. The point clouds were acquired by two different platforms in Rotterdam. The aerial imagery of the same area was acquired at a different time. We evaluated the matching results for both datasets and concluded that the new procedure reliably extracted the 3D tie points for 55% of the tiles of the size of 90 m from the first MLS dataset. In the second dataset, 60% of the tiles of size 74 m yielded reliable 3D tie points. It is not necessary to successfully register all tiles because the results of this work will be used for the trajectory adjustment and the IMU can reliably support the positioning for small intervals. [Termes IGN] surface de l'eauRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a comprehensive total vertical uncertainty (TVU) model for topo-bathymetric Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) systems. The TVU model consists of a combination of analytical uncertainty propagation for the subaerial (above water) portion and Monte Carlo simulation models for the subaqueous portion (water surface to seafloor). The TVU model was tested on a topo-bathymetric LIDAR data set collected by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Geodetic Survey (NGS) in Southwest Florida, U.S., in May 2016 using a Riegl VQ-880-G topo-bathymetric LIDARsystem. The TVU values were compared against the empirical standard deviation and were found to capture the variability of uncertainty with depth while providing (slightly) conservative estimates of uncertainty. The results may be used to inform data acquisition protocols and data processing models. The model implementation is now beginning to be used operationally at NGS for topo-bathymetric LIDAR projects. [Termes IGN] télémètre laser terrestreRésumé : (auteur) The target-based point cloud registration and calibration of terrestrial laser scanners (TLSs) are mathematically modeled and solved by the least-squares adjustment. However, usual stochastic models are simplified to a large amount: They generally employ a single point measurement uncertainty based on the manufacturers’ specifications. This definition does not hold true for the target-based calibration and registration due to the fact that the target centroid is derived from multiple measurements and its uncertainty depends on the detection procedure as well. In this study, we empirically investigate the precision of the target centroid detection and define an empirical stochastic model in the form of look-up tables. Furthermore, we compare the usual stochastic model with the empirical stochastic model on several point cloud registration and TLS calibration experiments. There, we prove that the values of usual stochastic models are underestimated and incorrect, which can lead to multiple adverse effects such as biased results of the estimation procedures, a false a posteriori variance component analysis, false statistical testing, and false network design conclusions. In the end, we prove that some of the adverse effects can be mitigated by employing the a priori knowledge about the target centroid uncertainty behavior. [Termes IGN] télémètre laserRésumé : (auteur) We have developed a transportable distance meter based on a 1550-nm laser diode, that is, intensity modulated at 5 GHz. This fiber-based prototype is realized using telecommunication components that are reliable, largely available, and affordable. We have identified and quantified the different sources of error when measuring with this technique a distance between two positions of the same reflector. Minimizing these errors and evaluating their uncertainties lead to a global uncertainty of 4 μm (k = 1) up to 1 km. This value does not include the additional errors caused by the evaluation of the atmospheric parameters. This uncertainty has then been verified over 100 m by comparison with an optical interferometer. The prototype was also tested outdoors over 5.4 km and has shown a resolution of 25 μm for an integration time of 10 ms. Distance measurements for long distances with this prototype are still limited by the air refractive index effect. Nevertheless, we have demonstrated that the uncertainty on optical distances reached with this simple technique is compatible with the future development of a two-wavelength system with air index compensation.
