[Termes IGN] sous-boisRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of the current study was to develop methods for estimating the height and horizontal coverage of the forest understorey using airborne Lidar data in three managed pine plantation forest typical of the south eastern USA. The current project demonstrates a two-step approach applied automatically across a given study site extent. The first operation divided the study site extent into a regularly spaced grid (25 × 25 m) and identified the potential height range of the main Loblolly pine canopy layer for each grid-cell through aggregating Lidar return height measurements into a ‘stack’ of vertical height bins describing the frequency of returns by height. Once height bins were created, the resulting vertical distributions were smoothed with a regression curve line function and the main canopy vertical layer was identified through the detection of local maxima and minima. The second operation sub-divided the 25 × 25 m grid-cell into 1 × 1 m horizontal grid, for which height-bin stacks were created for each cell. Vertical features below the main canopy were then identified at this scale in the same manner as in the previous step, and classified as understorey features if they were lower in height than the 25 × 25 m estimate of the main canopy layer. The heights of the tallest understorey and sub-canopy layers were kept, and used to produce a rasterized map of the understorey layer height at the 1 × 1 m scale. Lidar derived estimates of the 25 × 25 m lowest vertical extent of the coniferous canopy correlated highly with field data (R2 0.87; RMSE 2.1 m). Estimates of understorey horizontal cover ranged from R2 0.80 to 0.90 (RMSE 6.6–11.7%), and maximum understorey layer height ranged from R2 0.69 to 0.80 (RMSE 1.6–3.4 m) for the three study sites. The automated method deployed within the current study proved sufficient in determining the presence and absence of vegetation and artificial structures within the understorey portion of the current forest context, in addition to height and horizontal cover to a reasonable accuracy. Issues were encountered within older stands (e.g. more than 30 years old) where understorey deciduous vegetation layers intersected with the coniferous canopy layer, resulting in an underestimation of sub-dominant heights. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) We have investigated calibration variations in the Rameau water vapor Raman lidar. This lidar system was developed by the Institut National de l'Information Géographique et Forestière (IGN) together with the Laboratoire Atmosphères, Milieux, Observations Spatiales (LATMOS). It aims at calibrating Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements for tropospheric wet delays and sounding the water vapor variability in the lower troposphere. The Rameau system demonstrated good capacity in retrieving water vapor mixing ratio (WVMR) profiles accurately in several campaigns. However, systematic short-term and long-term variations in the lidar calibration factor pointed to persistent instabilities. A careful testing of each subsystem independently revealed that these instabilities are mainly induced by mode fluctuations in the optic fiber used to couple the telescope to the detection subsystem and by the spatial nonuniformity of the photomultiplier photocathodes. Laboratory tests that replicate and quantify these instability sources are presented. A redesign of the detection subsystem is presented, which, combined with careful alignment procedures, is shown to significantly reduce the instabilities. Outdoor measurements were performed over a period of 5 months to check the stability of the modified lidar system. The calibration changes in the detection subsystem were monitored with lidar profile measurements using a common nitrogen filter in both Raman channels. A short-term stability of 2–3 % and a long-term drift of 2–3 % per month are demonstrated. Compared to the earlier Development of Methodologies for Water Vapour Measurement (DEMEVAP) campaign, this is a 3-fold improvement in the long-term stability of the detection subsystem. The overall water vapor calibration factors were determined and monitored with capacitive humidity sensor measurements and with GPS zenith wet delay (ZWD) data. The changes in the water vapor calibration factors are shown to be fairly consistent with the changes in the nitrogen calibration factors. The nitrogen calibration results can be used to correct the overall calibration factors without the need for additional water vapor measurements to within 1 % per month. [Termes IGN] télémètre laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data provide 3-D measurements of vegetation structure and have the potential to support the calibration and validation of satellite and airborne sensors. The increasing range of different commercial and scientific TLS instruments holds challenges for data and instrument interoperability. Using data from various TLS sources will be critical to upscale study areas or compare data. In this paper, we provide a general framework to compare the interoperability of TLS instruments. We compare three TLS instruments that are the same make and model, the RIEGL VZ-400. We compare the range accuracy and evaluate the manufacturer's radiometric calibration for the uncalibrated return intensities. Our results show that the range accuracy between instruments is comparable and within the manufacturer's specifications. This means that the spatial XYZ data of different instruments can be combined into a single data set. Our findings demonstrate that radiometric calibration is instrument specific and needs to be carried out for each instrument individually before including reflectance information in TLS analysis. We show that the residuals between the calibrated reflectance panels and the apparent reflectance measured by the instrument are greatest for highest reflectance panels (residuals ranging from 0.058 to 0.312). [Termes IGN] système de numérisation mobileRésumé : (Auteur) The rapid acquisition techniques of over- and under-water geoinformation is urgently needed. The Shipborne Over- and Under-water integrated Mobile Mapping System (SiOUMMS) applies plug-in and multi-process network technology to achieve integrated data acquisition and cooperative control of multi-sensors, such as Global Navigation Satellite System, Inertial Measurement Unit, laser scanner, and multi-beam echo sounder. The proposed system can meet the requirements of diverse application scenarios and sensors, allowing for flexibility and scalability. Meanwhile, coarse calibration based on a set of common points and fine calibration using the plane feature constraint are proposed for integratedly obtaining the exterior orientation elements of the laser scanner and the multi-beam echo sounder. Together, these methods provide theoretical support and technical help to the seamless integration of over- and under-water point clouds. Experiments are also described, proving that the root mean square error of over-water point clouds is 0.133 m, the average elevation clearance spacing between adjacent over- and under-water point clouds is less than 0.3 m, and the average horizontal clearance spacing is less than 0.2 m. At the same time, cases in this paper show that SiOUMMS has made important achievements in the integrated measurement of reefs, coastal zone, and inland waterways, and has broad prospects for future applications. Note de contenu : Introduction
