[Termes IGN] Texas (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) The electronically steerable flash lidar (ESFL) is a waveform lidar sensor that incorporates two advances relevant to the design of future spaceborne lidar sensors. The first is a nonmechanical scanner that splits a single incoming beam into a variable number of output beams that can be aligned independently across track; the transmitted beam pattern can be changed up to 60 Hz. The second is a flash focal plane array (FFPA) capable of recording waveforms simultaneously from a 128 x 128 pixel grid with individual footprints spread over multiple pixels. In this paper, the incoming beam was used to illuminate eight 8.4-m footprints which were imaged simultaneously on 12 x 12 pixel subsets of the FFPA. The FFPA digitizes waveforms at a vertical resolution of 75 cm over 41 vertical bins to create waveforms of 30.75-m depth. Multiple waveforms obtained using range-gating were combined for these analyses. ESFL data were collected at Manitou Experimental Forest (MEF), located in the Pikes Peak National Forest, Colorado, USA and the Stephen F. Austin Experimental Forest (AEF), located in the Angelina Forest, Nacogdoches, TX. We evaluated the use of individual pixel-level and aggregated footprint-level waveforms and alternate approaches to define the extent of each footprint in the focal plane array. Using discrete return lidar data as a reference, we evaluated the ability of ESFL lidar to estimate canopy height and compared the two sensors' rates of penetration to the terrain surface. We found the footprint-level waveforms were better suited for use with existing waveform processing techniques, although techniques for processing at the pixel-level appear feasible. Relationships between height estimates from each lidar data set were most closely related when footprint-level ESFL waveforms were calculated after removing pixels that had less than 50% of the maximum energy within that footprint. Regressions between ESFL and reference lidar data estimates - f height explained 84% (AEF) and 85% (MEF) of variance; this study could not say definitively which method yielded the more accurate estimate of height. The main error sources affecting the quality of lidar-derived secondary products such as digital terrain models (DTMs) and digital surface models (DSMs) are the result of systematic errors coming from insufficient boresight calibration. The effects of boresight misalignments are visually recognised as discrepancies of the laser point clouds at selected objects (such as building roofs) in overlapping areas of neighbouring lidar strips. In this work, a strip adjustment method is presented that corrects the systematic errors of the laser point cloud using five strip parameters (three shifts plus two angular corrections for heading and roll). The strip adjustment procedure uses 2D and 3D tie elements and takes advantage of a new 3D measurement technique applied to building roofs. The strip adjustment method is applied to three different datasets, consisting of conventional first/last pulse and full-waveform data. The results show that systematic discrepancies are typical for datasets that have already been processed by the flight companies. These errors can be reduced by more than 70% by applying the new strip adjustment approach. Preliminary investigations indicate that a higher laser point density and the inclusion of intensity and pulse width within full-waveform lidar data lead to better results. (SAM, Inc.) performed a mobile Lidar survey of the historic Sixth Street district in Austin, Texas, USA, for an urban planning project being conducting by the municipality. Sixth Street is an acclaimed music and entertainement district in the heart of downtown Autin, and city planners intend to redevelop it, broadening the pedestrian streetscape and improving both vehiclular and pedestrian traffic control. Using mobile lidar technology to survey this busy street significantly shortened data acquisition time and provided survey-grade deliverables to the city. The detailed point cloud dataset was also made available to city planners for 3D planning and visualisation. [Termes IGN] réflectance végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) A new multi-wavelength canopy LiDAR (MWCL) system intended for the remote sensing of vegetation reflection was designed and its measurement performance was investigated. The system operates with four lasers of different wavelengths chosen according to nitrogen stresses that induce changes in the optical properties and spectral reflectance of rice leaves. The optical design and instrumentation are described in this paper as well as a discussion on system calibration. The MWCL system was demonstrated to possess a high capability of recording the physiology of the canopy, which is not possible when solely employing a traditional single-wavelength LiDAR.
