[Termes IGN] modèle de transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) A radiometric characterization of Space Imaging's IKONOS 4-m multispectral imagery has been performed by a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) funded team from NASA Stennis Space Center, the University of Arizona Remote Sensing Group (U of ARSG), and South Dakota State University (SDSU). Both intrinsic radiometry and the effects of Space Imaging processing on radiometry were investigated. Relative radiometry was examined with uniform Antarctic and Saharan sites. Absolute radiometric calibration was performed using reflectance-based vicarious calibration methods on several uniform sites imaged by IKONOS coincident with Ground-based surface and atmospheric measurements. Ground-based data and the IKONOS spectral response function served as input to radiative transfer codes to generate a top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance estimate. Calibration coefficients derived from each vicarious calibration were combined to generate an IKONOS radiometric gain coefficient for each multispectral band assuming a linear response over the full dynamic range of the instrument. These calibration coefficients were made available to Space Imaging, which subsequently adopted them by updating its initial set of callibration coefficients. IKONOS imagery procured through the NASA Scientific Data Purchase was processed with or without a Modulation Transfer Function Compensation (MTFC) kernel. The radiometric effects of this kernel on various scene types were also investigated. [Termes IGN] précision infrapixellaireRésumé : (Auteur) The Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere (LBA) experiment in Amazonia represents a unique opportunity to make a comprehensive study of the Amazon region and its components ecosystems. To make sense of the field studies and to generalize the results from them, remote sensing techniques and comprehensive mapping are critical elements for producing region-wide science results. In this paper, we present the processing work done for one such mapping campaign, that of the JERS-1 L-band two season (low and high flood) SAR data collected in 1995 and 1996. Specifically, to make a useable resource for other LBA researchers to explore, the datasets from the two seasons had to be coregistred (to a sub-pixel level), radiometrically calibrated, and interpreted to verify the quality of the data. This paper describes the techniques used to achieve these goals and estimate of the land cover based on a simple classification of the data. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) The goal of the work was to estimate, quantitatively, vegetation state and productivity using AVHRR based Vegetation Condition Index (VCI). The VCI algorithm includes application of postlaunch calibration to visible channels, calculation of NDVI from channels' reflectance, removal of high frequency noise from NDVI's annual time series, stratification of ecosystem resources, and separation of ecosystem and weather components in the NDVI value. The weather component was calculated by normalizing the NDVI to the difference of the extreme NDVI fluctuations (maximum and minimum), derived from multiyear data for each week and land pixel. The VCI was compared with wheat density measured in Kazakhstan. Six test fields were located in different climatic (annual precipitation 150 to 700 mm) and ecological (semi desert to steppe forest) zones with elevations from 200 to 700 m and a wide range of NDVI variation over space and season from 0.05 to 0.47. Plant density (PD) was measured in wheat fields by calculating the number of stems per unit area. PD deviation from year to year (PDD) was expressed as a deviation from median density calculated from multiyear data. The correlation between PDD and VCI all stations was positive and quite strong (r2 > 0.75) with the Standard Errors of Estimates (SEE) of PDD less than 16 percent ; for individual stations, the SEE was less than 11 percent. The results indicate that VCI is an appropriate index for monitoring weather impact on vegetation and for assessment of pasture and crop productivity in Kazakhstan. Because satellite observations provide better spatial and temporal coverage, the VCI based system will provide efficient tools for management of water resources and the improvement of agricultural planning. This system will serve as a prototype in the other parts of the world where ground observations are limited or not available.
