[Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (auteur) To date, numerous Earth observation datasets from different types of satellites have been widely used in photogrammetric fields, including urban 3D modelling and geographic information systems. The development of small satellites has provided a new way to obtain repeated observations in a short period. However, compared with that of standard satellite imagery, the geometric performance of imagery from small satellites is relatively poor, restricting their photogrammetric applications. Traditional methods can improve the accuracy of optical images with the addition of well-distributed ground control points (GCPs), which require considerable financial and human resources. The collection of multi-view datasets is an alternative method for geometric processing without GCPs, but relies heavily on the stability and revisit period of satellite platforms. Therefore, this paper presents a framework for improving the geopositioning accuracy of multi-source datasets obtained from optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, and a novel heterogeneous weight strategy is proposed based on an analysis of the geometric error sources of SAR and optical images. The geometric performance of multi-source optical imagery from the Jilin-1 (JL-1) small satellite constellation is evaluated and analysed first, and then Gaofen-3 (GF-3) SAR images are calibrated based on statistical analysis for the production of virtual control points (VCPs). Based on our proposed heterogeneous weight strategy, multi-source optical and SAR images are integrated to improve the geopositioning accuracy. Experimental results indicate that our proposed model can achieve the best performance compared with other popular models, producing an accuracy of approximately 3 m in planimetry and 2 m in height, thereby providing a generic way to synergistically use multi-source remote sensing data. With the use of the sea surface echo (SSE) data obtained from the spaceborne PRs, this article aims to estimate the radar parameters of pulsewidth and beamwidth and to evaluate the bias in the NRCS estimates caused by the discrete range sampling. Since the SSE shape is closely related to the received pulsewidth and the two-way cross-track beamwidth, those parameters are individually estimated from the SSE shapes. The SSE shapes are also used to evaluate the impact of the discrete range sampling on the NRCS statistics. The pulsewidth and beamwidth estimated from the SSEs compare well with the level-1 values and accurately reflect changes in the configuration of the radars. The NRCS statistics in GPM version 06 show that the calibration consistency between GPM KuPR and TRMM PR is evaluated within the range of −0.39 to +0.03 dB (−0.48 to +0.11 dB) with (without) the peak correction. The wide-scale use of the science products derived from the two MODIS instruments on the Terra and Aqua spacecrafts is a result of their excellent on-orbit performance, calibration stability, and accuracy through the life of the mission, making them a benchmark against which the performance of newer instruments is frequently evaluated. The recently launched multispectral instrument (MSI) aboard the Sentinel 2A and Sentinel 2B spacecrafts are part of the European Union’s Copernicus program designed to acquire high spatial resolution imagery in the reflective spectrum from 0.4 to $2.2~\mu \text{m}$ . One of the popular techniques to evaluate the on-orbit calibration is by comparing the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance with an independent (well-calibrated) sensor while viewing a pseudoinvariant desert target, such as Libya 4. In this work, the TOA reflectances from Terra and Aqua MODIS and Sentinel 2A and Sentinel 2B MSI are compared using the same-day scenes from Libya 4. The corrections for spectral response function mismatch and the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) are formulated and applied to obtain an effective TOA reflectance difference between the spectrally matching bands of these sensors. The availability of off-nadir MODIS overpass pairs with MSI facilitates the comparison across the entire MODIS scan-angle range and in turn an on-orbit evaluation of the response versus scan-angle (RVS) corrections is performed. Additionally, each MODIS instrument is used as a transfer mechanism to evaluate the calibration differences between the two MSIs, with an agreement to within 1% observed between the two MSIs. The radiometric calibration differences between Terra MODIS and the two MSIs at nadir is generally within 4%, with only the red-band pair (Terra MODIS band 1 and MSI band 4) showing disagreement beyond 4%. In general, the reflectance ratios are in better agreement with Aqua MODIS than with Terra MODIS. A better agreement between MODIS and the two MSIs is observed at nadir, indicating some residual effects associated with the BRDF correction that are observed in the off-nadir scene pairs. Also included in this article is a description of the various uncertainties associated with this cross-calibration. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) In recent times, multi-spectral drone imagery has proved to be a useful tool for measuring tree crop canopy structure. In this context, establishing the most appropriate flight planning variable settings is an essential consideration due to their controls on the quality of the imagery and derived maps of tree and crop biophysical properties. During flight planning, variables including flight altitude, image overlap, flying direction, flying speed and solar elevation, require careful consideration in order to produce the most suitable drone imagery. Previous studies have assessed the influence of individual variables on image quality, but the interaction of multiple variables has yet to be examined. This study assesses the influence of several flight variables on measures of data quality in each processing step, i.e. photo alignment, point cloud densification, 3D model building, and ortho-mosaicking. The analysis produced a drone flight planning and image processing workflow that delivers accurate measurements of tree crops, including the tie point quality, densified point cloud density, and the measurement accuracy of height and plant projective cover derived from individual trees within a commercial avocado orchard. Results showed that flying along the hedgerow, at high solar elevation and with low image pitch angles improved the data quality. Optimal flying speed needs to be set to achieve the required forward overlap. The impacts of each image acquisition variable are discussed in detail and protocols for flight planning optimisation for three scenarios with different drone settings are suggested. Establishing protocols that deliver optimal image acquisitions for the collection of drone data over horticultural tree crops, will create greater confidence in the accuracy of subsequent algorithms and resultant maps of biophysical properties. [Termes IGN] photogrammétrie aérienneRésumé : (Auteur) The use of consumer grade unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) is becoming more and more ubiquitous in photogrammetric applications. A large proportion of consumer grade UAVs are equipped with CMOS image sensor and rolling shutter. When imaging with a rolling shutter camera, the image sensor is exposed line by line, which can introduce additional distortions in image space since the UAV navigates at a relatively high speed during aerial acquisitions. In this paper, we propose (1) an approach to calibrate the readout time of rolling shutter camera, (2) a two-step method to correct the image distortion introduced by this effect. The two-step method makes assumption that during exposure, the change of camera orientation is negligible with respect to the change of camera position, which is often the case when camera is fixed on a stabilized mount. Firstly, the camera velocity is estimated from the results of an initial bundle block adjustment; then, one camera pose per scan-line of the image sensor is recovered and image observations are corrected. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, four datasets of block and corridor configurations are acquired with the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and its original Hasselbald L1D-20c camera. The proposed method is implemented in MicMac, a free, open-source photogrammetric software; comparisons are carried out with other two mainstream software, AgiSoft MetaShape and Pix4D, which also have the functionality of rolling shutter effect correction. For block configuration datasets, the three software give comparable results. AgiSoft Metashape and Pix4D are sensitive to the flight configuration and encounter difficulties when processing datasets in corridor configurations. The proposed method shows good robustness both in block and corridor configurations, and is the only method that works in corridor configuration. After the application of the rolling shutter effect correction, the 3D accuracy is improved by 30–60% in block configuration and 15–25% in corridor configuration. A further improvement can be expected if a precise dating of image is available or if the camera positions can be directly extracted from GNSS data.
